Well, you brought it up, so I figured you considered it of interest to writers. And besides, no one got the life rights to the Queen or Idi Amin (that was an adaptation of a novel, but nothing would've stopped a spec writer from spinning the same story if the novel hadn't been written). THE AVIATOR wasn't an adaptation either.

My point was, since writing meaty roles for actors is one consideration for spec writers, does that make it more attractive to look at historic or other real people and events. Has to do with Tao's point in his Bag of Tricks posts, too.

I have the same misgivings (and have posted about it) when good acting means good impersonation, but sometimes the role transcends that.

Yeah, you do raise a valid point. I brought it up mostly as a general comment on the Oscars but I think it's more preference than anything else. I personally don't lean towards real life stories so even if it were to my benefit so I could attract an A-lister, I still wouldn't be able to write one.

I work with what I have and that's passion for the characters that populate my own stories. So what I aim for is making them as complex as possible in hopes that actors/actresses will dig that. Some ppl love adapting real life stories...I kind of find it a bit boring.

It became more and more obvious as the night went on that Babel was not going to win best picture, considering it didn't win anything else. And I think the last best picture winner to win no other awards was Grand Hotel in 1932.

Oh well. Babel was my pick and I believe that it is the best film of 2006. The Departed is simply too flawed a film to be awarded best picture.

Scorsese won only because he didn't for much more deserving films. Yes, I said that multiple times, but the fact remains that it was given out of pity.

The lead acting awards were as painfully obvious as last year's and the one before that.

At least Little Miss Sunshine has a plot.

My explanations/guesses/suppositions for why The Departed won best picture are two-fold:

          1. "Legitimize" the Best Director award...
          2. Um... vote American...?

All right, I'm out of guesses. I'm glad for Marty.

Scratch my head. Shrug. "Yay for Marty..."

I think LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE is fully deserving of best original screenplay honors.

Fair enough...but I felt that it was just a bunch of loosely connected vignettes. Things happen. There you go...

                  I'm certain.

The family has a clear, concrete goal that they persue as the movie develops each family member's own personal sub-stories. Things happen as they move closer toward the goal. There are actual obstacles (which I will not go into because they are obvious if you've seen the movie) keeping them from reaching the goal.

Lost in Translation is Bill Murray in Japan. Things happen...and that's it. What the f--- is the purpose of that "story"? It's not even a story. It is literally nothing more than a bunch of random stuff!

Re: Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

Wasn't able to see it since it wasn't on tv here this year (not even on cable)
I also expected Babel to get Best Picture, but I guess the rule 'Best Director = Best Picture' was stronger than that. I'm also kind of dissapointed in Eddie Murphy not winning supporting as I thought he was better than Alan Arkin in his performance. Also it would have been cool to see Abigail Breslin win over Jennifer Hudson.

Babel was clearly superior to everything nominated except Letters from Iwo Jima, but nobody was going to give Best Picture to a foreign language film. And yes, it became painfully obvious that it was not going to win as all of the "big" awards went elsewhere - cinematography to Pan's Labyrinth, editing to The Departed, etc. I was very glad that it won Best Original Score, because the music is the thing that holds the disparate stories together.

Did anyone see the other entries for Best Screenplay? I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a better script out there than LMS.
