These people in this nationally published article...do they give their reasons for believing Scorsese's Oscar win was not for The Departed, but for other movies he's done? Because this anonymous Internet poster has given multiple, specific reasons why I don't believe it happens that way very frequently, if ever.
    Have you read the article?

And yes, sorry but I do give more credence to people who's very livelihood depends on them being close to Hollywood and the players there than to some anonymous guy who just doesn't agree.

Hmmmm... who do I go with? An actual journalist's AP article based on interviews with people who actually LIVE and WORK in HOLLYWOOD and the MOVIE BUSINESS or a post on a forum from an internet poster.....

      Also from the article:

Bette Davis was passed over in 1935 for "Of Human Bondage," so was rewarded for "Dangerous" the next year - a role that film historian Leonard Maltin calls "rather cheesy." And Elizabeth Taylor didn't win for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1959, but two years later for "BUtterfield 8" - a film she freely disparaged, Maltin says.

For film buffs worried that their favorite has been passed over for the wrong reason, it's worthwhile heeding the carefree attitude of the late Katharine Hepburn, herself a four-time best actress winner. "Don't worry about not being nominated," she said in a telegram to Audrey Hepburn, who'd been passed over for "My Fair Lady," according to "Inside Oscar" by Mason Wiley and Damien Bona. "Someday," she wrote, "you'll get it for a part that doesn't rate it."

Re: Oscars Tonight! Who are your winners?

        Have you read the article?
Yes, I read the article. It's full of opinions, with not a shred of proof or even a bit of logic or reasoning offered to back them up.

If you asked these people exactly WHY they think a given award was really just a consolation prize or a "lifetime achievement award," they'd say "Well, that's my OPINION" or "I just didn't THINK Movie X deserved the Oscar."

A version of this AP story runs every single year, because every Oscar ceremony in history has been followed by scores of Monday-morning quarterbacks who feel the need to come up with explanations for the votes that didn't go the way they predicted or hoped they would. People who work in Hollywood aren't immune to that -- if anything, they're more susceptible.

But when I apply a little reason to these theories, actually looking for the logic behind them, I come away thinking they don't make much sense and aren't very likely. I've given my reasons in multiple posts here.

You don't have to agree with me, and you certainly don't have to take my having an opinion that differs from yours as any kind of personal affront. I'm not saying my opinion is better than anybody else's, and I'm not saying I know more about the movie business than people who've worked in it for years. I'm just saying here are my specific, concrete reasons for not believing these theories, and I find those reasons more compelling than someone else's unsubstantiated feelings on the matter -- even a purported expert's feelings.

I suppose you believe the past 2 national elections haven't been tampered with either. Pollyanna.

So, what's your opinion on why Return of the King won?

According to a couple of friends of mine, one who used to write film criticism for his paper and the other who used to be a radio film critic, the reason why Lord of the Rings, which was clearly the best of the three movies, didn't win Best Picture in the year it was nominated, was because there was kind of an unspoken collusion amongst academy members to wait until the last film came out and that, in fact, Return of the King's Oscar was not for Return of the King, but for all three films.

That way, as some other mates of mine opined, it would keep Peter Jackson from being the one guy who could pull off three Best Pictures in a row.

Wait -- now you're saying this year's Oscar ballots were actually tampered with?

That's a whole 'nother level of conspiracy theory. You might actually convince me with that.

At this point, can't you guess?

My opinion is that the most likely explanation for Return of the King's win is that lots of Academy voters sincerely thought it was the best movie that year. Not necessarily a majority of Academy voters...but enough of them that RotK got more votes than any other movie.

Any more complicated explanation than that invariably revolves around somebody's opinion that the winning movie didn't deserve the award, so some other factor must've been at work.

I'm sure that's true. I'm just saying I don't think there's any reason to assume Explanation B is correct when Explanation A is much simpler and straightforward.

his energy usage has gone UP since his science fiction movie (bio that was a good one ). How does that work???

You do not have to heat every room of a mansion all the time, certainly not to the same extent you would a small family home... That's utterly absurd.

The fact that he has solar etc to offset energy requirements means his real-world usage is even higher!

Having said all this, if you use nuclear power to generate electricity, this all becomes pretty much moot....

And as long as Gore is contributing his fair share of particulate pollution to keep things in balance we will all be ok.

How can you call yourself a writer?

You lack imagination and a healthy distrust in your fellow man.

I'm guessing that the square footage of Gore's "mansion" has got to be conservatively four to five times the size of my house (after all, the article mentioned a house and guest house).
Don't know the actual square footage, but the main house has 20 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. It's probably 10 or more times larger than your home.

I have a wild imagination, but I don't let it color my perception of reality or affect my ability to reason.
