  • Best Disaster/Survival Movie?

I was just watching Dawn of the Dead and thinking how much I like disaster/survival movies. Any favorites?

By far, I'd say the original Poseidon Adventure. Granted, it's a little dated in the pacing and effects department, but there's also some great allegorical subtext going on that no one would bother putting into a contemporary action flick.

Plus, it's fun to watch Leslie Nielsen (as The Captain) play it straight as an actor.

Yeah, definitely the original Poseidon. Hackman's last scene...top that.

Yeah, Pt. 2: It's always fun to see Neilsen in a serious role, after Airplane and the Naked Gun franchise made him into an absurdist comedy legend. It adds a whole new layer to Forbidden Planet!

SAN FRANCISCO (1936) with Clark Gable & Spencer Tracy. Oddly enough, it has more realistic FX than anything that has been made since. It's the SF earthquake and aftermath. Great story about people coming together after their world falls apart... and I think PA steals its best parts from it (Tracy's character and Hackman's character are almost the same guy).

Poseidon Adventure, totally. I first saw it when I was a kid and I was a die hard Airwolf fan. I saw tv ads and begged my dad to let me stay up and watch it because the guy from Airwolf was in it. I was mesmorized, couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

For a second there, I was thinking "Jan Michael Vincent wasn't in Poseidon, was he?"

I miss some of the All-Star mega diasaster pics like Towering Inferno and the Airport series (Airport '75 being my favorite).

For a different type of survival screenplay...Castaway with Tom Hanks

Some others that come to mind:

                  Anthony Hopkins in The Edge
                  Tea Leoni in Deep Impact
                  Linda Hamilton in Dante's Peak
Hanks & Crew in Apollo 13

If you like Dawn of the Dead and disaster films, the one to keep your eye out for is called Plane Dead.

Think Snakes on a Plane...with zombies (in its defense, I recall the script being greenlit before the whole SoaP buzz began).

That's pretty much all you need to know about it, other that it maintains a nice little balance between humor and horror, with some pretty nifty gags interspersed along the way. It's the first zombie flick since Shaun of the Dead that I've had a complete blast throughout. The EXT. CGI gets a little hinky at times, but it works with the tone.

And it has a Goke: Body Snatcher from Hell reference!

The winter season is over, so these shouldn't bother us too much, (and you could probably find 'em at Jumbo Video or Blockbuster).

Dante's Peak -- great chemistry between the leads, great effects, great script (for the kind of movie it is), and something that's almost always missing from recent films -- a great soundtrack.
