  • Hollywood North: Way, Way North

THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN finally showed up at the local video store. Inuit films seldom get into the local theatres, here. Again, Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn present an insightful film of an aboriginal culture on the brink of a transformation. Be aware that, with its slow pace and Inuktitut dialog, it's not for everyone; and, if one doesn't pay attention, the dénouement in the final scene may come as a bit of a shock, (or, could be a puzzlement for those who still "don't get it"). The acting is superb, (with veteran performers from ATANARJUAT). Inuks portray their ancestors from eighty years before, (shown in photographs with the end credits), and the focus of the story is not told from the Danish viewpoint. When Christianity came to the Far North, the old ways disappeared; and, how much that culture has changed can be seen in the "making of" featurette on the DVD. Pay attention, and pages from the screenplay written in Inuktitut and in English, (on opposite pages), can be seen in the "making of" featurette.
