Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced they have set David Ondaatje to make his directorial debut on a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 debut "The Lodger". Michael Mailer, who is also serving as a producer on the project, adapted the screenplay from the original Marie Belloc Lowndes novel. Inspired of course by the mass hysteria generated by Jack the Ripper and his killing spree in 1888, this "Lodger" is set around two separate storylines: an uneasy relationship between an unstable landlady and her mysterious lodger and a troubled detective engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse with an elusive killer. Sony has not yet decided which of its labels will release the movie or if they will simply send it straight-to-DVD/Blu-ray.
With "The Birds" getting the remake treatment soon as well, one can only wonder which title Hollywood will pick from the Hitchcock vine next. "Vertigo"? "North by Northwest"? "Rear Window" (although "Disturbia" could be considered close enough)? "Frenzy"?
