What are your favorite supernatural thrillers over the past decade?

    Re: Best Supernatural Thrillers

    The Abandoned
    Unrest
    1408
    Vital
    The Ring
    Dead Silence
    Riding the Bullet
    The Devil's Backbone
    The Others
    The Frighteners

Truth be told, this isn't the era for Supernatural Thrillers.

The 50's, 60's, & 70's were the primo decades for the genre.

    The Uninvited
    The Haunting
    The Changelling
    House On Haunted Hill
    Thirteen Ghosts
    House of Usher
    The Pit and the Pendulum
    Ghost Ship
    Horror Hotel
    Carnival of Souls
    Wicker Man
    The Legend of Hell House

There are 2 in the past decade that really stand out for me.

      THE SIXTH SENSE
      THE RING

I was highly impressed by both films, and would likely list both in an all time discussion.

"Audition." That one really creeped me out. If you haven't seen it you really must.

Hmm... not sure though that it would be considered Supernatural. But it is certainly strange, and creepy and disturbing.

There's a heap, but off the top of my head...

            1408
            The Eye 1 & 2 (Jap)
            The Ring
            Sixth Sense
            Kairo (Jap version of Pulse)
            Session 9
            The Abandoned
            Don't look in the basement
Don't be afraid of the dark

The only ones that have impressed me in the last decade are Blair Witch, Stir of Echoes and Dead Birds.

Amen to Stir of Echoes. I'd like to add Beneath - ghost story set in a sub during WWII - very effective.

1408 was really good, glad to see other people liked it too.

                  Stir of Echoes
                  Sixth Sense
The Ring (the last 30 minutes or so)

can't believe so many people liked 1408. wow.

I can't believe so many people like The Ring. I couldn't sit thru it, it was putting me to sleep. And the original Pulse was underwhelming. Not a fan of J-horror or its remakes.

I haven't seen a lot of the movies mentioned but I did like The Devil's Backbone.

Most Supernatural Thrillers are snooze fests. The story is usually on the thin side. More than a few minutes of "suspense" without the story moving forward and I'm falling asleep.

Is Identity considered supernatural? Most of that was OK. Didn't like the ending, tho.

I'm gonna check out Abandoned. At least the foreign element might make it a little more interesting.

Yeah, seriously: 1408 and THE RING as examples of the "best"?

Of course, I leave myself open to attack with the following:

                      FALLEN (underrated Denzel pic...)

WHAT LIES BENEATH (completely predictable but enjoyable enough...)

Whoa...we forgot about The Ninth Gate

Not nearly as enthralling as the novel, but it's one damn good devil movie.

We could list (3) Japanese/Thai supernatural thrillers to Hollywood's (1).

Night Watch is a damn good supernatural thriller.

I'm gonna check out Abandoned. At least the foreign element might make it a little more interesting.
You won't be sorry. Awesome pace, good story, and it's directed by an extremely talented filmmaking prospect: Nacho Cerda!

Check out Unrest too(script by a DD'er). I really enjoy it too....this and ABANDONED were the only truly good films at last year's Horrorfest. This year's line-up seems pretty decent.

The Deaths of Ian Stone and Borderland have both got a good 'early' buzz for this year's Horrorfest.

Is it just me or is calling most of these films "supernatural thrillers" somewhat amusing considering the majority of them are really horror films?

I guess for some the phrases "horror" and "thriller" are interchangeable.

                            Agreed. A real disappointment.
