Shh... don't give someone remake ideas.

Actually, I forgot about the whole Nazi Exploitation subgenre that was big in the early '70s. Delivered on the torture and the porn.

All I saw of the bunch was Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS.

That was enough for me. Although amusingly enough, the thing was surreptitiously shot on the set of Hogan's Heroes after dark. Damn Canadians (Ivan "Ghostbusters" Reitman produced one of the sequels).

Makes Hostel look as camp as one of the later Freddy Krueger movies.

Part of this is that the originals were all made outside the system - so there were no rules and no studio suits involved. Remaking them, they tame them and make them "studio safe".

You can't look to the studios for original horror - they never had them in the first place.

I saw most of the originals at the drive in, so what's new on the DVD shelf? That's where you need to be looking for original horror. (Which is where you'll find most of those cool imports.)

... Uh, what about "Psycho?" "The Haunting?" "Rosemary's Baby?" "The Exorcist?" "Jaws?" "Alien?" "The Shining?" "Poltergeist?" "A Nightmare on Elm Street?" "Jacob's Ladder?" "Scream?"

First half of the list... pretty damned good.

          Second half, seriously over-rated.

Question is, where are you drawing the line?

Man, any freaky ones? The first time I dreamt with Freddy, dude was trying to kill me. Second time, though, apparently I was already dead so, since he couldn't kill me, I just hung out with him.

              Then we ran into Jason.

I was expecting the battle of the century. Instead, the fvckers shook hands and came after me.

Well, regardless of what anyone thinks of them (and I could have mentioned more), all of them came from or were released from the "mainstream" Hollywood system. So, "original" horror can come from within that alley just as it can from indies. It just depends on the situation and those creatively/financially-involved.

Freddy dreams pale in comparison to your girlfriend slapping your head repeatedly - only to wake up and find its really happening.

                  I snore a bit.

Hehe, I find slapping better than a sock in the mouth (or worse). It hasn't happened to me yet, but I am known to snore on occasion...

                        J over --

I love all of the movies you listed except SCREAM, which I merely like.

Oh, dude, you have no idea.

I remember one in which Freddy wrapped this hose around me so that I couldn't move and then proceeded to slice up my face, all the while taunting me with lines like "Closed casket for you, my friend" and "Don't worry, I'm saving your eyeballs for later."

I won about thirty percent of our battles, though. (Oddly enough, I lost some of the ones I started via lucid dreaming.)

Edit: And no, it never hurt. Thank god.

Re: Platinum Dunes Rebooting Nightmare on Elm Street

No... NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was *not* a studio film. It was a co-production by two Indie distribs - Egg (from Sweden, I think) and New Line (their first film, ever!).

And you have to look at Wes Craven - he was a complete outsider. He and Sean Cunningham made these cheap exploitation movies like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT that played drive ins (usually under a number of different titles). FRIDAY THE 13th got *picked up* by Paramount. These are outsider films - even when someone like Paramount eventually distribbed them. CHILD'S PLAY was made outside the system and picked up by Universal... and then Uni made the rest of the films (but they may have even been neg pick ups).

Yes, there are studio made horror films, but when we're talking about movies being toned down and made studio safe when remade - the movies we're talking about were not made by the studios in the first place.

Well, some of them at least were. I'm just saying a strong genre feature can emerge from a studio just as it can from an independent outlet. It always comes down to the situation at hand and who is involved in all facets of the project.
