  • The CARY GRANT thread

I've just been getting over a viral infection and have been basically an invalid for the past few days. Laptop on bed, remotes on bed, and tobacco pipe on bedside table...the whole sha-bang.

Well, to my good fortune, WEDNESDAY on Turner Classic Movies was Cary Grant marathon day(all Oscar winning/nominated films too, no less).

I'd like this thread to be about your favorite Cary Grant films; rather than be a thread about a film-a-thon every working person on the forum missed on Wednesday.

I think we can all pretty much agree on The Philadelphia Story, but how about Grant's other classics?

I would've married Irene Dunn back in the day, because I just find her hilarious on so many different levels. With that said, two of my absolute favorite-perhaps even underrated-CARY GRANT films are: The Awful Truth & My Favorite Wife. Full of laughs those two films are...

I have Penny Serenade on el cheapo DVD, but haven't seen it yet

Notorious is my favorite Hitchcock film, and it also stars Cary Grant opposite the radiant Ingrid Bergman. FANTASTICO FILM!

Now, what are some of your favorite CARY GRANT films?

Charade...To Catch a Thief... I even loved Father Goose.

      The list is endless.

The thing that always struck me about Grant -- he could make the most mundane dialogue sound good.

They don't make them like him anymore.

        What about His Girl Friday?

There's a thousand laughs in that one.

The Awful Truth isn't underrated. It's widely considered a classic of its genre - and rightfully so. Its my favorite comedy of his. Charade being my favorite non-comedy (that's right, North by Northwest, I said it.)

The scene where he walks into his 'soon-to-be' ex-wife's piano lesson(or is it singing lesson?) expecting to find her carousing with her teacher is HE-HAW-LARIOUS!! He slips and knocks over that entire table, and his foot gets stuck in the chair. And his wife is just holding back the Seven Seas during her recital, trying not to laugh.

Man, I was crying the first time I saw that.

Recently watched Holiday. Sigh. Cary Grant is swoon worthy in every regard. Love The Awful Truth as well - the scene where Irene Dunn plays his sister is hysterical.

Geez, Cary Grant, too many to list...

                To Catch a Thief
                The Bishop's Wife
                Arsenic and Old Lace

If Pen were still here I'm sure he'd give Gunga Din an honorable mention.

He was one of the best of the best. Gorgeous and talented, a true icon.

Here's a rare clip (see how he takes rather mundane dialogue and makes it work):

                    Love him.

You know what I told my Valentine date last night after I gave her that chunck of cubic zirconia? I said.....

Dry you eyes, baby. It's out of character...

All those mentioned so far. Also recently saw Walk Don't Run which was fun.

My favourite Grant movie though definitely has to be North By Northwest. A true classic.

And it's true, they don't make 'em like they used to.

This movie is about the furthest thing from a comedy imaginable.
