  • Genie Awards (Academy of Canadian Cinema)

In criticizing the Oscars, I mentioned the Genie awards and three of the films up for awards, (this past evening). AWAY FROM HER and EASTERN PROMISES took most of the awards. Costume design: Carlo Poggioli, Kazuko Kurosawa, Silk.
Original score: Howard Shore, Eastern Promises.
Original song: Valanga Khoza, David Hirschfelder, Kawa (From Shake Hands With the Devil).
Overall sound: Stuart Wilson, Christian Cooke, Orest Sushko, Mark Zsifkovits, Eastern Promises.

Odd that Juno is not in there with Reitman, Page and Cera being Canucks.

          Juno & The Genie Awards

No matter if the film was produced in Canada and most of its budget was spent in Canada, to qualify as a "Canadian film" under the rules of the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office, six points must be obtained for Canadians in the following positions: director (2 points), screenwriter (2 points), 1st top paid actor (1 point), 2nd top paid actor (1 point), director of photography (1 point), composer of original music (1 point), art director (1 point), and editor (1 point). Jason Reitman (director), Ellen Page and Michael Cera (actors), and the team of Michael Diner and Catherine Schroer (art directors), may be Canucks; but, that only adds up to five points, (of the necessary six points). Diablo Cody (screenwriter), Eric Steelberg (director of photography), Matt Messina (original music), and Dana E. Glauberman (editor), (who may all be Yanks), may have kept this film from qualifying as "Canadian." And, then, Fox Searchlight, (an American production company), did not bother to apply for a CAVCO certificate, (probably not qualifying for a Canadian tax credit, not paying 75% of its costs to Canadians, not being a Canadian film distributor, and not wanting to pay a processing fee of 0.3% of the production costs, maybe as much as US$22,500 for a US$7,500,000 budget). Another disqualification might have been its premiere in the United States, (three weeks before its release in Canada), whereas a "Canadian" film is supposed to first be released in a Canadian theatre.

In the case of EASTERN PROMISES, David Cronenberg (director), Howard Shore (music), Ronald Sanders (editor), and Peter Suschitzky (director of photography), may be the qualifying Canucks, (for at least five of the six points); and, being a co-production sponsored by Telefilm Canada with British producers, an "exemption" may have been granted by CAVCO, (as the screenwriter, lead actors, and art director appear to a Yank and a few Brits), if Cronenberg didn't claim to be an uncredited co-writer for tax purposes. The film premiered in Canada and the States on the same date.
