  • Your Favourite Current Director?

    Name 'em...

I'll start. Michael Mann. Amazing level of detail and accuracy. Not to mention a perfect judge of music.

    Come on, let's have it.

Mann would probably be mine, too. An amazing sense of atmosphere.

I think Tony Gilroy may be the man to watch in the years to come.

I'm a big Nolan fan. I like de la Iglesia too, but the geek side of me is shouting "Peter Jackson" loud.

                  Re: Your Favourite Current Director?

A year doesn't go by where I don't pop Heat into the DVD player, and I'm the only person I know who would get all giddy over a Miami Vice sequel. Humph.

But currently, it would have to be Cronenberg simply because he doesn't shy away from nude fight scenes.

I wish Nicholas Hytner would do more films.

                        I like Tony Gilroy, too.

                              Re: Your Favourite Current Director?

Once again - this style of question is very hard to narrow down to "one" director. So I'll have a crack at my current favs. Both old and new.

                              George Romero -
Why? Obvious reasons. The guy invented my favorite genre - Zombies!!! Plus from what I hear he's still showing the younger generation of film makers how to do horror - properly.

                              David Fincher -
Why? Incredible sense of style, atmosphere and technique. His films always look so rich and delicious. Plus, his technique as a film maker and story teller is amazing. Please, please do Torso and Rendezvous with Rama.

                              Dan O'Bannon -
Why? He might look like an Amish elder these days - but apart from co-writing one of the greatest science fiction/horror movies of all time - Alien - he also did one of the funniest and most enjoyable zombie movies of all time too - Return of the Living Dead.

                              Greg Mclean -
Why? He made Wolf Creek on the smell of an oily rag ($1.3 Million AUD - which is about the US equivalent of the on-set catering budget for Transformers) - and took the Australian slasher flick to a worldwide audience which generated $50 Million in global sales. He not only proved that independent horror can turn over a decent buck - but also Australian horror films can too. The result is now an increased influx of financing for genre films in Australia. Plus, the Weinsteins invested $30 mill in him to make Rogue - a giant croc, creature feature, set in the Northern Territory.

                              James Cameron -
Why? Because its James Cameron. Everytime he makes a film he breaks new technical ground. He only comes around once every few years - but its always worth the wait. Personally, I think AVATAR is going to be the greatest sci-fi film since Star Wars. It will change people's lives.

Others - I won't abbreviate on, but are in my DVD collection, none the less.

                              Steven Spielberg
                              Zack Snyder
                              Martin Scorsese
                              Robert Rodriguez
                              Danny Boyle
                              James Gunn
                              Alfonso Cuarón
                              Christopher Nolan
                              John Carpenter
                              Michael Bay
                              Oliver Stone
                              Neil Marshall
                              The Coen Brothers
                              Andrew Dominik
                              Michael Mann
                              Ridley Scott (earlier work)
                              David Slade
                              Quentin Tarantino
