  • Summer '08: Predictions?

Which blockbuster will tank? Which will soar? Which of them will matter to you the most?

    Re: Summer '08: Predictions?

I had thought SPEED RACER as a lock to tank, but some of the buzz from people who've seen the film in its rough form is actually quite positive.

INDY will make a sh!tload...WALL*E is gonna be massive...PINEAPPLE EXPRESS could be another surprise hit a la SUPRBAD, though personally I think it looks stupid.

HANCOCK looks equally underwhelming, but you never bet against Will Smith when it comes to his ability to open even a lackluster pic.

TROPIC THUNDER will be a massive hit.

MUMMY 3: is there ANY interest in this film?

    And so on....

Movies that will make mega-bucks (in B.O. order):

      Indy 4
      Wall-E
      The Dark Knight
      Tropic Thunder
      Hancock

Movies that will do good business:

      Iron Man
      Speed Racer
      Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
      Wanted
      Pineapple Express
      Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

Movies that will do no business:

      The Incredible Hulk
      The Happening
      Step Brothers
      Get Smart
      The Love Guru
      The X Files 2
Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D

And that's about summer wrapped up.

I agree, I think Pineapple Express read very well, but the trailer looks terrible ... bad casting re: Franco, and wrong tone for the direction. The guy they picked to direct apparently has done a bunch of afterschool special, coming of age type flicks. Not sure why he got this gig. I predict disappointment there.

I'm surprised that some have said bad things about Hancock -- all I've seen is that trailer, and it looks brilliant. Though the trailer could be misleading. If it is an accurate portrayal of the film in general, I think Hancock will be huge. An irresponsible slacker given superpowers. I love it, wish I'd thought of it.

        Also huge, I predict:

Wall E (Pixar's latest toon, always a good bet, and this one looks really cute)
        Indy (of course)
Iron Man (the teaser trailer is tremendous, hope that translates)
        Tropic Thunder

Indy will do very well, Wall-E will bring in the families, Iron Man has a chance to be a real surprise, and The Hulk will absolutely tank.

Other than that, it's a crapshoot.

Taking doubler's list, and re-arranging it.

            MEGA-BUCKS:

            Indy 4
            Wall-E
            The Dark Knight
            Tropic Thunder
            Pineapple Express

            GOOD BUSINESS:
            Hancock
            Get Smart
            Iron Man
            Speed Racer
            The X-Files 2
            Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

            BAD BUSINESS:
            Wanted
            Hellboy II: The Golden Army
The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor
The Incredible Hulk (too bad, too - good script)
            The Happening
            Step Brothers
            The Love Guru
Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D
Sent from my iPhone. Because I'm better than you.

I don't see Indy making more than 250 mil US. Wouldn't be surprised if Wall E outshines it.
