Unbelievable ... after 80 years, they were convinced it was lost forever ...

Can't wait to see the complete film.

"But the restored version, which has so far been seen by only a handful of film experts and critics in Berlin, is said to throw light on key questions that have puzzled and tantalised generations of film buffs.

"The uncut version is said to solve the mystery as to why Maria, the workers' insurrectionist leader, is mistaken by a baying mob for her doppelganger, a female robot.

"Schmale, a spy who is sent by the autocratic leader of the futuristic city, Joh Frederson, to pursue his son, Freder, plays a minor role in the cut version, but a significant supporting role in the original. 'The role ... can finally be understood,' Rother said.

"A scene in which children are saved from the workers' underworld is also said to be 'much more dramatic' - and more violent - than in the cut version....

"Helmut Possman, director of the Friedrich-Wilhelm Murnau Foundation which holds the rights to Metropolis, said the film, which is badly scratched, would be made available to the public after it has been restored." ~ Kate Connolly
"New scenes may make more sense of the head-spinning narrative. Fredersen has an enigmatic henchman called Der Schmale, or The Thin Man, who's paid to spy on his son. All his scenes, once cut, have now been restored, which may help us understand Fredersen's voyeuristic control-freakery, and supplement the expressionist, noir-ish menace of the film. The new scenes show more of Worker 11811, with whom Freder exchanges clothes to gain access to the underground: these revived sequences may lubricate the film's passage into the working-class depths. And there are more scenes reportedly showing fights between Fredersen and Rotwang, who is revealed to have been in love with Fredersen's late wife, Freder's mother - these scenes may shed more light on the film's deeply strange, innovative techno-sexual imagery." ~ Peter Bradshaw
The BBC and CBC also have short articles on this new footage.

And somewhere in a shadowy film vault lies the cut footage from The Magnificant Ambersons.... in a dusty tin mislabled "Ma & Pa Kettle".
