Chris Nolan to helm his original sci-fi epic...

Christopher Nolan will be shooting another project of his own before he returns to Gotham City. Nolan will direct a sci-fi action film called Inception at Warner Brothers which will be released in the summer of 2010. It is described as a "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." Warner Brothers is producing with Nolan's wife Emma Thomas, as has been done on almost all of his previous films. The screenplay for Inception was written by Nolan and we're presuming he also collaborated with his brother Jonah Nolan.

Someone on trackingb also stated: The nolan script was read by 4 (WB) execs who were brought into a room to read in privacy. No one was able to leave with any material.

Should be interesting. Seems like there's a few sci-fi ideas in development. Hoefully, the genre will make a comeback.

So I guess we can be pretty sure the script isn't floating around.

This internet script-trading thing must be pretty nice for big-time writers. They can actually demand to be in the room while the execs read their scripts, once and for all making sure that they've actually been read.

From Nolan's POV, I'm sure he'd rather the execs NOT read it. So, long as they give him the greenlight.

The dream is that they just sign the checks and take your word for it.

But this is the whole reason he's agreed to direct the Batman movies, so that he has the freedom to get his "real movies" made - he's admitted this several times and it's hardly a secret.

And after DK, WB probably just gave him a blank check... on the condition he direct Batman 3 of course.

TDK solidified him as a real Hollywood power player. Nolan now has the film making equivalent of the keys to the city. And it would be a safe bet to assume, whatever he makes from now on, is bound to make money.

I think it was a smart move. Especially if his ultimate goal is to make his own ideas into films. That surely would be every film makers dream.

Bare in mind though - a lot of top directors often bitch about how tight studios are with money, even if it's their ideas, but Nolan has had a film that's grossed nearly a billion dollars so far. And it's only a year old.

Wouldn't surprise me if WB has a stack of blank checks, with his name printed on them.

For Nolan it's a very smart move. Nobody's bigger than him right now. So he can name his budget on a passion project. That happens to one director every ten years or so (Cameron being the last one of course). If Batman 3 were to "only" make 300 million for instance, his stock would not be as high.

He is a BATMAN fan. In The Following it's clearly stated, so if he's using Batman as a springboard for his passion projects... I dunno. He clearly has/had enthusiasm for it.

From the language, it sounds like a long-dormant high school project he's finally got the clout to realize.

It was reported/rumoured/someone made it up that Nolan's next project was a big budget film of 1960s tv show The Prisoner. I'm a little disappointed that film isn't happening although a new six part tv Prisoner is being broadcast later in the year. It stars James 'The Passion of the Christ' Caviezel as Number Six.

Yeah, that description doesn't really raise my excitement level. It all depends on where you go with it of course. But the last sci-fi "in the mind" type movie we got was The Cell. And we all remember that one. Or don't.

I'm so glad Chris didn't do another Batman film straight after TDK, it shows he's got integrity. I actually prefer his smaller films (Memento, Prestige) and hope Inception is going to make my brain melt.

I didn't say he hated Batman, only that it's not his life's goal to be a director of funny book movies.

I remember a few interviews where he stated something similar to, he directs blockbusters so that he has the freedom to fund other, more personal movies that he *really* wants to make.

That doesn't mean he phones it in, as BB and TDK were pretty good, but that's simply not what he aspires to do for the rest of his life.
