  • The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

I know I should have seen it before this, but I didn't. Just saw the DVD version in gorgeous color.

I don't know if I've ever seen a more striking couple than Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo. And the costumes! Perfect French style.

    But the music...lush, romantic, dramatic.

It was really such a simple story line, but I was surprised by the ending. So affecting.

So different from anything we see today. Romantic cynicism, maybe?

Or maybe it's romantic realism. Sad, though, without being trite or cliched or judgemental. That's hard to
    do.

Especially without any straight dialogue - lyrics are all sung.

I love this film, even though I cry at the end every time. Maybe its because it does that every time, that I like it.
