  • FREEWAY --R. Witherspoon totally rocks

Anybody see this? It caught my eye at the video store. A modern reworking of The Little Red Riding Hood, with Kiefer Sutherland as the wolf and an absolutely dazzling Reese Witherspoon as a foul-mouthed, sassy, street-smart teen in and out of foster homes and juvie on her way to stay with Grandma. It's clever and violent and energetic and it gave me HUGE respect for Witherspoon, whose talent I always recognized but who did nothing for me personally until now. Brooke Shields (as wooden as ever) and Brittany Murphy (lesbian heroin addict in prison) are also in it, as well as Amanda Plummer in a typical short but wacked out weird performance.

Anyway, I recommend. I love discovering little flicks I never heard of at the store. Came out in 1996 btw and won several festival awards, including Sundance.

I love this movie. Best thing I've seen Witherspoon in.

      Love, love, love this flick.

By far, her best role. And KS wasn't bad either.

          Buy it.

Not only was it hi-to-the-f*ing-larious, but it was a great take on the fairy tale.

Keifer and Brooke Shields were great, too.

*goes to find movie to rewatch tonight*
          I'm always right.

Well done with an outstanding performance from Reese. But it's the kind of film that wears thin for me after four or five viewings.

LOL I know, I couldn't believe that was the same Reese Witherspoon, little miss Legally Blonde! That mouth on her, wow, plus she totally kicked ass.

However I don't think the murdering of the guard was necessary, not just because it was gruesome and gratuitous, but because I don't feel it served the story well: just when the cops finally DO believe that shooting then killing the big bad wolf was a matter of self-defense, they're going to have to lock her up again for being an accessory to the savage murder of the prison guard in the girls' escape. So the poetic justice fails on that level and makes the ending less satisfying and her character much harder to like.

Love this movie. Too bad she went and became a "movie star".

                    Isn't this the process, though?

You (artists) start out doing counter-culture work and then the culture you're rebelling against gradually assimilates you... And pays you to promote its own values... So, you never want to go back to being the "Rebel without a clue" who might be more raw, but flat broke?

Look at Easy Rider, himself, Dennis Hopper.

                    Then... And now
                    Positive outcomes. Only.

Great film. And it got totally screwed when it didn't even get an Oscar nomination. It was far better than Braveheart that year.
