All the list sites are still in progress it seems, besides the Oscar site.

Nice to see Up nominated for Screenplay and Picture, though it would be nicer if it had a chance of winning either award. I think there's a better chance of seeing an alien invasion, but I can dream.

I agree that it's nice to see Pixar finally get a Best Pic nom, but if I had a vote, it wouldn't go to UP. Not even close.

I'm excited about the nominees, though. I really like that Best Pic list. Lots of variety. Lots of stunning films.

2009 was a helluva year for cinema as far as I'm concerned.

I think Screenplay is a possibility. It's competition is really Inglourious Basterds. Hurt Locker's screenplay really wasn't spectacular, although the directing was. Serious man was meh. I haven't seen The Messenger though.

You're right, but I can't get 2003 out of my head - Finding Nemo, one of the best screenplays of the decade, losing to Lost In Translation, one of the worst screenplays of all time.

The Oscars, like every other awards show, is a popularity contest.

Since I despise the academy, there is no question IB wins best original screenplay.

I hope Tarantino win for Best Original Screenplay.

My only disappointment is that Jackie Earle Haley didn't nommed for "Watchmen", let alone the script for best adapted screenplay. Too early, I guess.

Popularity contest - true. I honestly think Avatar will win best pic simply because there are so many fans of the film, that if it loses will never watch another Academy Awards ceremony again, and in the end, what the Oscar wants...is ratings.

I hope Tarantino loses everything cuz we'll be buried under an avalanche of Tarantin-esque $hit.

Avatar is a lock for best picture... Unfortunately.

That, and most of the major awards that go along with it like directing, editing, music, sound editing, etc.

The screenwriting categories aren't that great, either. Meaning, I'm pretty sure it will be "Up In The Air" for adapted.

The individual categories for acting are the only remotely wild card ones that aren't a foregone conclusion.

Great year for movies, but subpar for awards when you know one juggernaut is going to steam roll over everything else that might be more deserving.
                            Positive outcomes. Only.

the Screenplay Oscar isn't a screenwriting award.

It's usually a consolation prize for the most literate-seeming movie that didn't win the Best Picture award. It's got nothing to do with the actual writing.

UP IN THE AIR should be a cinch to win the adapted screenplay award. As for original, tougher call, probably Basterds.
