The problem is.... Nobody saw this movie, unfortunately

It was not a North American release (it's UK), it's sci-fi and these two things together make it a niche movie that usually rule the Oscars, but in an ironic twist of fate this year do not.
    Positive outcomes. Only.

It did have a brief US theater run that was wide enough to make it to my area for a short time. Never got to see it, though.

Honestly, I think more people saw Moon than Crazy Heart, and Bridges is a front-runner in that category.

I'm in Vancouver, and MOON played here for weeks. I saw it on the same day as THE HURT LOCKER back in the summer. I still have yet to see CRAZY HEART, which was supposed to be a 2010 release until Bridges' performance started getting awards buzz.

Added some more names to the forgotten actors list.

COLLAPSE should have gotten a documentary nod as well...

Meryl McDonald's. One billion nominations received.

Sorry, but I hate bad movies. Probably more than most people.

And what I hate even more is the fact that every bad movie could be great if the concept and story were treated with respect.

There should never be a bad film. Never.

With the talent pool of writers and filmmakers out there, ALL movies could be great.

It's such a sadness to see poor films, especially when those films win prestigious awards.
Are you sure there's going to be that large a talent pool when you eliminate all the writers who didn't think JUNO, LOST IN TRANSLATION and THE DARK KNIGHT were all terrible?

People have different taste in movies, respond to different things on both an emotional and intellectual level. The most talented of writers and filmmakers would approach the same source material in vastly different ways.

Setting aside the whole notion of quality as judged by popularity... while there are criteria that make certain films aesthetically better than others, in the creative arts, you are never going to be able to boil it down to what works for everyone and what doesn't work for anyone.

That's why so many professionals will scoff at the idea of trying to make a script "perfect."

At some point, no matter how much knowledge of the craft you gain and apply to your artistry, there's a personal message you convey as an artist that, while improved by cannot truly be quantified... although through dollar and awards, people try.

So that's why this debate could (and just might) go on forever.

Aren't we lucky that there are so many popular, quality and bad movies for us to argue about. It also helps than no can say with any authority which are which.

I think it's been a great year for movies.

It just becomes a sub par year for awards because a lot of it becomes a foregone conclusion as a result.

                  My Picks:

BEST ACTOR - George Clooney (although it might be Jeff Bridges)

                  BEST ACTRESS - Sandra Bullock

                  BEST PICTURE - Avatar

BEST DIRECTOR - Kathryn Bigelow (first woman to win Oscar)

BEST ADAPTED SP - Jason Reitman & Sheldon Turner (Up In The Air)

BEST ORIGINAL SP - QT (Inglorious Basterds)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Anna Kendrick (engenue; Up In The Air)

I could be 100% wrong, but I'm pretty confident in my picks because, as has been mentioned, the Oscars are a giant popularity contest predicated on bringing in ratings.

That's a pretty good list, WB, but I'm not sure about George Clooney. He may get it because everyone likes him and might feel it's 'his turn,' but in this movie - like many of his others - he looks like he's just playing himself.

I really liked the movie, but he's had much more challenging roles in the past.

I think everything is pointing to Jeff Bridges. It's his turn.

I think he's going to win too. Would have liked it better if he had won for playing the Dude in "The Big Lebowski", though.
