what was Monique talking about when she said it was a difficult decision but the right one? course, she had her pained face on so i had a feeling it was something really important.

        HITS

-The Up composer's win and speech
-The way Hanks sprung Best Pic on us so quickly
-Bigelow's shellshock after that second win
-Trying to understand what in the world Sean Penn was talking about

        MISSES

        -Crazy redhead lady
-What's so important about John Hughes?
-Camera cutting away for what seemed like forever when I wanted to see James Cameron's reaction to Bigelow's win.
-There were a few third-act spoilers that drove me crazy. For so many people, it's the first time they've heard of some of these great films.

REALLY? I thought the beginning was AWFUL. Painfully bad, like having to listen to a Leno monologue for hours straight. "OH LOOK, THERE'S THIS GUY IN THE AUDIENCE! LET'S MAKE SOME TAME GENERALIZED JOKE ABOUT THEM." I was excited to see Badlwin and Martin together, but man, was that a giant piece of sh!t.

Loved Stiller and Downey Jr. though. His comment about writers was the best zing of the night.

I think it has something to do with Monique's "brand." She is for the most part a lovable comedic actress, she has her talk show now, I've always liked her because she comes across as real. Taking this role was a break from her brand -- it wasn't a lovable character. Kudos to her! She did a great job.
Advice from writer, Kelly Sue DeConnick. "Try this: if you can replace your female character with a sexy lamp and the story still basically works, maybe you need another draft.-

maybe you can grow up a little and have some respect

some of the best performances are those that go against an actor's brand.
goodie two-shoes denzel washington didn't win an oscar until he played bad brother cop in training day.
the comedic robin williams did some of his best work in one hour photo and insomnia.
lovely halle berry doesn't get recognized for excellence until monster's ball.
slapsticker slacker adam sandler's best and only award winning role was in punch-drunk love.

the industry respects actors who can demonstrate their ability to work the ranges. notice how harrison ford never steps out of his comfort zone?

Her speech rubbed me the wrong way. Seemed self-righteous and self-pitying.

Starting off with "I'm glad to see it's about the performance and not the politics," that bugged me for two reasons. First, it's like saying "I had the best performance, thank god you didn't let other considerations rob me of what I was entitled to." And second, she's referring to the controversy over the fact that she refused to do much publicity for the movie because she wouldn't get paid for doing it. So she shortballs everybody else who worked on the movie for selfish reasons, and when pundits cry foul, she's the victim? Right.

Her strong sense of entitlement really put me off.

                        somebody gets it...

i'd personally like to get one so I could thank everyone from the producer to the caterer, realizing that I was a small element in the whole process... course, the odds of me winning are small and even smaller for a speech considering I would probably puke and pass out before I got to the stage.

my bad (and maybe sc111 too) but i thought you were looking for an answer to this question. but it looks like you were just looking for someone to join you in a slamfest.

i do recall a james cameron "king of the world" speech that put some people off. but whatever...

I haven't heard about the PR issue -- but actors refusing to do publicity is hardly a new phenomenom.

Entitlement? Bottom line -- she kicked butt in that role. That's a fact.

ETA: I googled and found that Lionsgate squashed the rumor that Monique demanded money for publicity appearances. Sad when rumors are stated as fact.

At Lionsgate, a spokesperson insists this isn’t true. “Mo’Nique is doing the ‘Today’ show for us, she’s coming to the New York Film Festival. She had scheduling conflicts for Cannes and Toronto, but she did come to the Sundance festival. We’re not paying her to do anything.” Calls to Mo’Nique’s publicist have never been returned.

ETA: While I'm at it -- I'd like to point out Precious breaks a lot of glass ceilings -- including proving a Black actress doesn't have to be skinny and lightskinned to get us to care about her character.

A woman as powerfully outspoken as Monique is bound to be misinterpreted. See sc111's post above.
