While watching it, I decided I was feeling more queasy than during any other movie I've seen. I kept expecting an Alien-like moment with some awful bloody violence. My sense of dread was strong, though others may not react that way.

It's definitely not a great movie--in fact, probably qualifies as B-movie material--but it had some interesting reversals, re-reversals and role reversals in how the protags view their situation and the actions they take to follow up.

I consider the title moderately humorous because it seems to sum up in one blunt word the brave new world of biotechnology.

Saw it last night. That **** was...terrible! I'm actually blogging about the absurdity of it as we speak. Decent premise...terrible execution.

THE THING is a B-movie. There's nothing wrong with that.

Actually, I like this better than THE THING.

Seriously??? The reviews have been pretty good. There seems to be a huge difference between audience and critics on this one. Cinemascore is a D, but it has 60 something percent on RT.

Well, I tend to agree with the critics more. Will be checking this out later in the week.

Splice was intelligent, well-written and definitely not afraid to take risks. Three traits I love in films.

The Thing is an A+ movie.

Cinemascore means as much to actual cinema as Jupiter. Probably even less.

          That is all.

            B-movie makes it sound crappy.

It's a good movie that's just not mainstream.

Based on what I've read, I got the impression audiences are going in expecting horror with lots of blood (the impression I also got from the marketing), whereas the movie is more thought-provoking scifi.

I don't know, because I haven't seen it, but I'll probably check it out at some point. On DVD.*

*It takes a lot to get me to a theater these days. I have to be really sure the movie's worth my money.

I saw this one and really loved it. It most certainly isn't your typical monster slasher. It is far more reserved for the vast majority of the picture and has a very Cronenberg-esque feel to it, and I really like that.

I highly recommend it, just don't go in expecting what most people have gone in looking for.

I agree totally. Splice was awesome.

THE THING is the holy grain of sci-fi/horror movies.

All this time I thought those knights were looking for a friggin' cup.

No wonder they never found it.

                            Re: Splice

Just got back from seeing Splice. I kind of liked it. It's hard not to see the half full in any movie I see on a Tuesday for $4.25.

My problem with it was that it had a real conflicted sensibility, at times it was dealing with relevant contemporary issues and showing how the characters actions were informed by their past experiences. At other times it over the top, dirty, and filled with unintentional laughs and slapstick.

The other thing I disliked was in a movie called SPLICE, we didn't find out what animals they combined human DNA with to create Dren. It might have informed our understanding of her behaviour.

They used those weird slugs with the stingers, and that definitely informed our understanding of her behavior. If they said what animals went into the genetic composition of those things I missed it. But I don't think they did.

I liked this a lot. RE-ANIMATOR meets SPECIES but not as campy as that mashup might suggest.
