  • Question: Was THE MATRIX the last franchise

based on an original idea? Too tired to look up.

    Probably...until Cars 2 and/or Monster's Inc. 2 are released.

But it doesn't really matter since the first Matrix is the only one that's good. The second two are insultingly terrible.

The Final Destination and Saw movies both came after The Matrix.

You could consider Pirates of the Caribbean to be based on the theme park ride, but the theme ride really had no characters or plot, so it is mostly original.

Who says The Matrix was based 100% on an original idea? I thought there were a few law suits.

So you're asking what franchises AREN'T based on a book or comic book or toy or Disney ride, right?

Any reason you ask? Just for fun?

Wasn't The Matrix based on Dark City?

Only two main products with some spinoffs, but Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality were both new products as far as I can remember.

The Matrix isn't officially based on any particular source material. It may have taken ideas from here and there, but I don't believe that counts in this particular context.

Re: Question: Was THE MATRIX the last franchise

Well, by franchise, I mean three or more films so that knocks out LEGALLY BLONDE and MISS C. and a host of others. And while MATRIX 2 and MATRIX 3 didn't live up to their hype, they made money.

The reason I bring it up to make a connection to the current state of specs and the tough terrain that new writers with new ideas have to travel through.

What about the National Treasure movies.

                          It's still branded, though.

Yeah. I thought of PotC but I'd say the theme park ride did spark much of the franchise's initial success.

I wouldn't say it sparked the movie's success, per se. What it spark was much of the franchise's...ever getting made in the first place.
