VERY BAD THINGS. Also, DEATH TO SMOOCHY is a favorite of mine, but I seem to be in the minority there.

Very Bad Things is the first one that sprang to mind. I mean, the whole damn' thing was dark, but that ending was brutal. Maybe the most nihilistic ending of a post-Strangelove comedy.

        Loved it.

Aren't a lot of the Coen Brothers' films pretty dark, or with dark twists? Fargo is my all-time favourite.

Also, as mentioned, In Bruges is great.

Some more obscure (Australian) ones are:

            Bad Boy Bubby
            Two Hands
He Died with a Felafel in his Hand
            The Square

There are others. (All of our comedy seems to be dark - not sure what that's about.) But that's off the top of my head.

              Dr. Strangelove. Boom.

Funny how a lot of the films mentioned are almost dramas.

I wish Americans would embrace dark comedy more. Words can't describe how much I loathe this Judd Apatow bullsh!t. Ugh.

I think that's an inevitable consequence of being dark. It's almost not funny. Except it is.

The British do it brilliantly - Monty Python being an obvious example. (How much darker can you get than a comedy about the Crucifiction?)

In fact, the more I think about it, the Australian propensity toward dark comedy is probably just an extension of our British heritage. Compounded by our fairly ruthless (convict) history, and our anti-establishment attitude.

That, or because our film bodies fund them.

Euros have a more world weary pessimism than Americans do. So they can go to dark places and have fun with it. In America, if you're not smiling and cheery, people will think something's wrong with you. w00t!
