The book was a huge success here so it really helped ticket sales. Plus, Bruce Beresford is an amazing director.

The fact that it's a true story, and the bloke is living here, working as a stock broker / author makes it just that little bit cooler. He's very nice - very accessible - and doing some great things for all kinds of artistic practices in this city/country. (Not to mention, the deaf community.)

I was a little disappointed by the film, mainly because it focussed on the less interesting Houston-set portion of the book and glossed over Li Cunxin's fascinating childhood and ballet training in China.

It's still a pretty good movie - with some of the most spectacular ballet sequences I've ever seen - but the book is much better.

And, per Nic's comments, my wife's boss personally financed a large chunk of the movie and she spoke to Li many times, finding him to be a very nice guy. A lot of the budget was sourced from his stockbroking connections.
