  • Due Date

I haven't paid as close attention as I used to, but did they ever say they were doing a modern day telling of PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES?

From the commercials, it sure looks like Robert Downey is playing the strait man (Steve Martin) and Zach is playing the quirky, annoying, heavy guy (John Candy).

Looks like the same plot also.

    Just curious.

    Anyone??

Cause if 80's movies are open season, I've got this idea about five high school students from different social classes and clicks who have to spend Saturday afternoon together at in school suspension.

I'm going to call it THE LUNCH CREW.

I think this movie falls under the guise of "there is nothing new under the sun". The script was very funny though. There is a similar script called The World's Most Annoying Man which could also claim Due Date stole their idea.

        Re: Due Date

I saw the trailer in a packed theatre last Saturday, where it was met with stoney silence.

Surely the actual movie must be better than that predictable and unfunny piece of drivel.

The older I gets the harder it is for me to laugh at a movie. Especially when asked to fork over twelve bucks.

I watch old episodes of The Simpsons.

Can't go wrong with THE SIMPSONS.

I haven't seen a movie in a long time that comes close to making me laugh as much as when I'm watching THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, AMERICAN DAD, or SOUTH PARK.

One thing they are doing that's pissing me off is keep showing more and more of the jokes/plot as the release date nears.

I'm watching the World Series right now and not long ago they did have a long preview.

old Simpsons, yes. I couldn't get into this script, the annoying character was TOO annoying. More OTT than needed to be.

I think its along the lines of 13 Going on 30. Obviously just "Big" with a girl, but was released as an "original" idea, not a remake.

                      Re: Due Date

They showed on the long preview I saw a scene where Robert and Zach were in the car singing a Barry Manilow song.

                      All I could think was...

"Boy, I hope this isn't a rip off of when Chris Farley and David Spade sang the Carpenters song in TOMMY BOY"

                        Re: Due Date

Saw this today. The plot's derivativeness kept it from scoring a major bullseye (the "due date" subbing for a holiday), so it only really works on the funny scene quotient. Good, but left of great. And the dog? What's the point except for that one scene?

Other than bringing no new colors to "the world's most annoying guy" premise, Downey fails to make his character's anger funny. He plays the straight man too straight and that's a shame. As actors who are not known for comedy go, DeNiro did a much better job as the straight man in MIDNIGHT RUN.

                          Re: Due Date

I agree, Roscoe. I was really disappointed with this one. Neither guy was likeable and neither was funny enough to overcome their unlikeability (a la Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets).

I thought the music in particular was a real downer and the editing added to a very odd movie. It had funny moments and lines, but they weren't played in a funny way and the movie took itself way too seriously. Then there was the bizarre attempt to have heart in the film, which as a total fail. This one is a rental.

But but Bob and Zach are real hot right now? What else do you need to do - other than putting them on the screen together?
