I just came back from it and really liked it. Love Carrey in non monkey roles.

The fact that this non violent outlaw is locked up for life in solitary makes me sick to my stomach.

Two straight guys playing gays and I totally believed in their attraction to each other. Much more than I ever did with Annette Benning and Julianne Moore.

i did but this was a better match in style... that drive and energy because of someone you love. it was real and grounded.
i taken you haven't seen this yet.

Doesn't open near me til Friday. I plan on seeing it this weekend.

And it's going to have to be really really good, 'cause I really really liked Spotless Mind.

I liked this better than Spotless Mind. With that flick I almost walked out after 30 min 'cause it took so long to feel exciting and authentic. This one grabs you right away.

what a ridiculous comparison. just because both these movies involve same sex relationships doesn't mean they should be compared. they're not the same genre. one is campy true story about a con man (like catch me if you can) doing whatever it takes for love and the other is a teenage coming of age story with infidelity mixed in. take out the same sex factor (which is what you need to do to not stigmatize or pander) and you would never compare these two flicks.

Ridiculous or not, that's one thing that bothered me in THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. I never bought that they were gay. Maybe because the film picked up when they were already middle-aged and married for years and we missed out on their initial love story, maybe because there was no chemistry. Whatever. I never bought it. I kept hoping that Jules would get it on with Ruffalo.

However camp the elements in PHILIP MORRIS, when those two finally came together physically, I totally believed it. Their longing, love and lust had been built up and was believable.

too much like a traditional 20 yr marriage for you. i get it. it's as if a gay marriage is going to maintain a high level of lust, love, and fidelity forever. lol!

one flick about the build up of romance the other about the inevitable slow down.

But there are plenty of films about marriage where the initial spark is gone and yet you still believe in the relationship. With this film I just never felt it on a gut level. Though the scene at the end where Moore turns off the TV to talk to her family is very nicely done. There are some really nice moments in the film and overall I quite liked it. But sometimes chemistry feels off between two characters, whether gay or straight. I mean, I didn't buy the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds in THE PROPOSAL, but maybe I'm in the minority.

Then I'll kill myself. Or, just discount your opinion.

Actually, I'll just say that Spotless Mind was one of the best science fiction movies of all time. Yes, I said it. So there, Rantanplan and Nike.

Now excuse me while I get back to my comic books and my Twilight Zone marathon.

Yeah, I'm going to have to discount your opinion. Carrey did much better work in Eternal Sunshine. And that flick was a better flick to boot.

I Love You, Phillip Morris was okay, but no great shakes. The only time I laughed out loud was when the guards came in to subdue the big black dude who played the music for Phillip.

I agree he did much more subtle, more truly dramatic work in Eternal Sunshine. For me, also, Sunshine is by far the superior film. (So is The Kids are Alright.)

Yes, the two straight guys played sexual attraction convincingly, but for me, the combination of presumably realistic gay sex didn't jibe with Jim C's usual goofy, whimsical, face-contorting clown of a character. The tones clashed for me.

I agree, Joan. One of the main problems for me was that the gay sex was portrayed in a broad, comedic light so it wasn't "real" considering the rest of the movie. (To be fair, the heterosexual sex was comedic, too, but I could live with that 'cause the guy's supposed to be gay, anyway, so it would make sense to me that it be played for humor.)
