  • Best art based thrillers?

Movies about painting, works of art, drawings etc that are thrillers? I always find these fascinating but there are never enough. There was one called Incognito. That was a great premise based on a true story in fact.

Others like this you know of?

Orson Well's F For Fake is an obvious choice, despite his weight at the time.

The Thomas Crown Affair isn't that terrible either.

Wim Wenders' AMERICAN FRIEND has an art subplot... that was made as its own film in RIPLEY UNDER GROUND (both based on Highsmith novels).

I wouldn't call Thomas Crown a thriller, though it's the first one that came to my mind.

Dorian Gray, maybe, but it's based on the novella. Same with The Shining.

Thrillers...thrillers...there should be more but none come to mind. How odd.

THE DA VINCI CODE kinda qualifies. What about photography thrillers? Lots of those...

F For Face is a fantastic documentary. I definitely recommend it.

Thomas Crown isn't bad. Certainly worth checking out.

The Da Vinci Code is an abomination that must be avoided at all costs.

Guess I wasn't paying attention to the word "best" in the thread title

Saw one called Anamorph a couple of years back. Wasn't all that great.

The foreign film the Forger (I think that was the title) about the german concentration camp was good. But I mean stuff along those lines where the art is the central thematic thrust. Thomas crown is alright. It's a heist movie rather than an art movie however imho.

I guess most of them do wind up being heist movies ultimately but I mean where they have to have an artist in them to complete the heist somehow?

Has anyone seen Incognito that I mentioned? That's the kind of thing I'm thinking of and I just can't find many others like it. There was a small Nick Nolte film a few years back about an art heist I think but I couldn't get through all of it.

I think that Nolte film was called The Good Thief, but I'm not sure, saw it once a while back. Also, I think the film Entrapment with Connery and Zeta-Jones was about an art heist.

Topkapi is worth a look, though it's about an artifact theft from a museum.

And if you are looking for ideas, check out the excellent 80s British TV series, Lovejoy, with Ian McShane playing an art dealer who regularly gets himself into rather a lot of bother.

Ah... will do. And yes, I think the Nolte bit was "The Good Thief."

I haven't seen GOOD THIEF since it came out, but it is a remake of one of my favorite movies BOB THE GAMBLER - which is a casino robbery flick.

I've always felt Argento's The Stendhal Syndrome was a terrific concept for a thriller which never realised its potential
