  • Pariah: a possible Oscar contender

NYU film grad Dee Rees makes her debut with this coming-of-age tale of a young African-American girl whose feelings for the same sex puts her at odds with her family and in herself. Stars Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Aasha Davis, Charles Parnell, Sahra Mellesse and Kim Wayans.

Executive-produced by Spike Lee, the film was a smash at Sundance. Will it become a favorite at the Oscars and make the African-American look within its own bigotry?

I doubt it. It's too low profile, didn't win Sundance, and is probably too much of a "niche" film within the black community to catch on with the entire Academy.

And I don't think there's enough there substantively to warrant such a nomination, especially being a plot-less coming of age film. If this was a short film, it could get nominated for Best Short, but not as a feature.
