  • Safety Not Guaranteed

heralded as the "quirky indie time-travel comedy" both my greatest hopes and fears were realized with this movie. it is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. consistently. you will laugh. and i was appropriately moved by the romance between leads Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass. their coupling is sweetly off-center.

without getting spoilerly, like most indie movies, it sadly does not fully deliver on the promise of its premise, however. which makes all the good that comes before the climax feel wasted on a cheat ending.

worth a look but don't go in expecting the Sundance version of "Back to the Future"

This movie looks interesting (read an interview with Plaza on it yesterday). Duplass is hit or miss with me, but I thought "Cyrus" was pretty good. Although to be honest, even if it were terrible I would see it for no other reason than I'm madly in love with Aubrey Plaza.

Plaza is solid, although not much of a stretch from April on Parks & Rec. Essentially the same character here. But that is in her wheelhouse and she plays to her comedic strengths throughout.

I loved it, and recommended it on an earlier DD thread I believe.

I liked it - knowing that as a Duplass Bros movie (produced by) it was going to be a little indie comedy rather than BACK TO THE FUTURE or some TERMINATOR type movie.

I liked how as the story unfolds the characters *do* travel to their pasts - just not using a machine. They deal with past issues that have haunted them as they investigate the time travel dude. It was funny and had some great cameo roles but Mark Duplass has no idea how to juggle groceries. Not nearly as good as HAPPY ACCIDENTS, but in that realm.

          SPOILER!!!!

My problem with the ending was - they set up the tin box, but didn't ever pay it off. I think the tin box would have been a better pay off than the end they had.

Totally agree. I liked it, didn't love it. The Duplass/Plaza relationship kept me engaged. Didn't like the lead reporter - at all. The ending felt like a cop out. Still, better than most first-time movies. I am a big Duplass brothers fan and I would say this is at least in the same ballpark as The Puffy Chair. What matters now is what the writer and director do with their 2nd and 3rd movies.

Are you talking about Trevorrow and Connolly?
(You do realize the Duplass brothers didn't write or direct Safety Not Guaranteed? Director: Colin Trevorrow Writer: Derek Connolly)

Features the Duplass brothers have directed include:
              The Puffy Chair
              Baghead
              Do-Deca-Panthathalon
              Jeff, Who Lives at Home
