Can someone explain what happened? It was a pretty good script, and while the film was engaging, so much was changed (and in my opinion, for the worse).

Yeah, that was the obvious answer, but I think it was more than that.
I don't know. I mean, Singleton is a solid director. The trailers just made it look like the most generic looking Action/Thriller ever, and every line Taylor delivered was cringe worthy. Of course, I haven't read the script.
Yeah -- it was NOT a good script to begin with... There were some truly cringe worthy scenes and dialogue. Plus huge plot holes and motivations that made no sense. I mean the very premise WASN'T the premise. He wasn't abducted. There was no Abduction.
But Lionsgate bought it specifically to be in the Tay-Tay business. And Singleton was a bit handcuffed because they had a VERY short window with which to push into production to accommodate Lautner's schedule. So they brought another writer on to rewrite on the quick.
So you start with a mediocre script... Try and rush a whole new, better version of it just to make a scheduling window for an actor who was never gonna carry a movie. I bet Singleton woke up every morning, looked in the mirror and said "Fvck my life -- Oh well, Least I'm getting PAID."
