  • Atheism/agnosticism in films

    Hi all,

I'm racking my brain trying to think of movies that deal specifically with agnosticism/atheism. In a narrative, NOT a documentary.

A character in conflict about whether to fall toward theism or atheism, and where that's the central conflict or one of the main conflicts of the film.

    Anyone know?

    Please and thank you!

See Luis Bunuel's Nazarin, it's about exactly this.

Maybe the HBO movie The Sunset Limited where Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones (how can you go wrong there?) discuss their opposing beliefs?

Marketable films tend to be about people who are doubting their faith finding it over the course of the story, for instance SIGNS and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN.

Nihilistic atheist films tend to be presented metaphorically. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN for instance and the randomness of evil striking down both good and bad. Or even PROMETHEUS despite all its heroine's protestations of "choosing to believe" ultimately says that our amoral creators made us as a failed experiment and are now just going to wipe us clean. In fact, Noomi's "I choose to believe" could be seen as a bit of the lady doth protest too much.

            "Agora?"

Also, an atheist/atheism-centric film doesn't have to be nihilistic.

Golden Compass. Be warned, though, the movie sucks.
