To parallel the western thread with a paralleling genre. What are your favorite crime sagas and which ones best parallel the western, my pic being Heat.
My god, what a ****ing movie that is.
It's the eye of the Tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
City of God is pretty awesome.
Reservoir Dogs
LA Confidential
American History X
Gangs of New York
Miller's Crossing
The Usual Suspects
Eastern Promises
Casino ( might be Scorcese's best) Loved the relationship between Pesci and Deniro.
SCARFACE
Godfather 1+2
LA Confidential
Usual Suspects
Eastern Promises
Traffic
HEAT (f*ckin incredible)
Miami Vice
Carlito's Way
Sugar Hill (slept on film)
Mobsters
The Untouchables
Goodfellas
The Animal Kingdom
The Town
True Romance
BLOW (why do people not talk about this movie? Depp killed it)
Donnie Brasco (another film Depp killed. Pacino was killed)
Road to Perdition (criminally slept on)
Once Upon a Time in America
Gangs of New York (a masterpiece in my eyes)
The Departed
New Jack City
American Gangster
Boyz N Da Hood
Menace II Society
King of New York (long live Frank White)
CITY OF GOD (so gritty, violent, and heartbreaking)
People sleep on Johnny Depp, he can act in serious films, he's been over shadowed by Captain Jack.
Crime Dramas are my favorite films, I hate that Hollywood doesn't make as many anymore.
No idea what you're talking about. There are only two Godfather films.
And Goodfellas...it's a well-made film, but every character is a completely unlikable asshole that I wish died violently within one minute. I don't enjoy spending two hours with assholes.

I totally agree with your view regarding the characters in Goodfellas except I did enjoy the film. It's a rare film that has only unlikable characters yet which is near universally lauded. It's gritty realism is what makes it great to me, and in my writing it's a reminder that rules are meant to be broken --- if I ever learn to write as well as Scorsese and Pileggi.

I wouldnt say the protag, Henry Hill, is an unlikeable *******. The film had a sense of humor to me that kind of evened out the despicable nature of most of the characters. But, maybe it's a New York thing. Of Martin's classics, TAXI DRIVER is the film I find off putting. Watching a man going nuts from loneliness is not entertaining to me.
