  • The Thread of Lesser Known Films of Interest

There have been a century of movies made and not all of them are as famous as Casablanca or Back to the Future.

If you come across an interesting film that we movie-lovers might like---but may not have heard of, please list it with a short description...maybe an imdb link also.

Here are two films that are not currently available on dvd but you might be able to check out depending on your subscription options.

The Heartbreak Kid (the 1972 original, not the Ben Stiller sacrilege)

      http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/heartbreak_kid/

It's on TCM tomorrow night (1/30 at 8pm)

      and

      Big Night

      http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/big_night/

which is currently streaming on Netflix, but occasionally pops up on TCM as well.

You will not regret seeing either of these.

Speaking of Amanda Peet I enjoyed IGBY GOES DOWN. It's about a rich kid who rebels against his suffocating upbringing.

            I can second "Big Night."

Louise Bourgoin's performance in "A Happy Event" is to die for.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover
                1989

When the NC-17 rating replaced the X, this was one of the first NC-17 films to hit 'art' theaters. I actually saw this in a theater in its original theatrical release. I do not know how or if it is available at this time, but if you think Helen Mirren is kinda hot in her old age, this and Caligula are from her younger years.

It is not the best movie ever filmed, but it is visually rich with cinematography, sets, lighting, costume (except when Helen Mirren has nothing on at all). Oh, and the twists are just a little bizarre.

                http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097108/...nm_flmg_act_75

"The wife of a barbaric crime boss engages in a secretive romance with a gentle bookseller between meals at her husband's restaurant. Food, colour coding, sex, murder, torture and cannibalism are the exotic fare in this beautifully filmed but brutally uncompromising modern fable which has been interpreted as an allegory for Thatcherism."

"The Trial," Orson Welles's second completed narrative feature. It's weird but good. Because it's public domain, it did not get a stunning 4K restoration.

Co-written by David Mamet and Shel Silverstein! Great movie.

A simple high concept, especially for its time. Saw this as a kid and it reminded me of what I thought film and storytelling was.

That film got Baldwin cast in "Full Metal Jacket." Kubrick liked the way Baldwin looked in a field jacket.
