in the movie M*A*S*H, Trapper John, new to the unit, pulls a jar of olives from his coat and drops one into his martini. in the middle of a war zone, he carried olives in his coat for a good martini, should one arrive and need an olive.

also in that movie was one of the best punches ever, when he hit Duvall (Frank Burns).

    Re: Cool

That's a good but strange film. Weird that it spawned a very successful TV show. I had seen the show a hundred times before seeing the movie. I've grown to appreciate the film after seeing a second time. By the way, I also read the book. Equally weird that someone saw that book and saw a movie from it. The book was not really funny at all. It was odd, yes.

I'm a big fan of the first 3 seasons of the show. I found it to be very funny (or rather I used to). I never liked the show when BJ and Colonel Potter took over. Even in reruns I never watch the bulk of the series because I didn't like the show however after seeing the film again it was probably more in line with the film rather then the slap stick of the first couple of seasons.

One other thing worth adding is Trapper John as you mentioned in your post was equal to Hawkeye if not an even greater role in the film. In the series he goes from equal partner to lesser role somewhere midway through season 1. It seemed the more control/popular Alan Alda got the more people were phased out.

        Gus in LONESOME DOVE.

during the whole saga, only seemed to really get rattled a couple of times (SPOILERS), when he hanged his old friend, Jake Spoon, and when the old cook read his fortune and told him he'd never marry again. he was as cool on his deathbed (much cooler than the gazillion tv viewers watching him die who were crying) as he was when living and doing things like cheating at cards to get a poke or wanting to chase buffalo, just for the thrill of chasing them. one of the best characters ever written...just my opinion.

          Re: Cool

As I get older my definition of "cool" morphs. I remember when I was a teen I thought Arnold in "Commando" carrying a log on his shoulder was bad-ass. Somehow that shifted to Don Draper flirting with a woman drinking an Old Fashion.

If you're gonna go Bruce Lee then I guess Steve McQueen is in there although I read his biography and he was not a nice guy. I like Bruce Lee more and I'm amazed at his charisma even today. He actually trained/worked out with Steve McQueen and some other stars.

At this stage in my life I think Sinatra and his rat pack were the ****. I didn't know or care about them growing up in the 80's. Of late the more I read about them the more interesting their wild life style was. I don't think anyone today can come close to partying as hard as they did but there was no youtube or TMZ following them.

              Re: Cool

Not to be a killjoy but the American movie star/rock star of late is so vastly different and less cool then their earlier counter parts in the 60's and 70's and maybe into 80's/90's. People like Bruce Lee, Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen and characters like Trapper John are long gone my friend. How about coming up with the element of cool over the last 10 years? You'd be hard pressed. If you were around in 1968 you'd have 6 or 7 examples. Of course as I mentioned there was no internet, youtube or TMZ back then to tell us these men & women were anything but perfect. Now for every 3 people who like Bruce Lee there's someone who is offended that he has his shirt off because they keep meaning to work out but can't get around to it. For every 3 people who like Trapper John carrying around olives in their jacket during a war there's 1 person who is uncomfortable because their father was a drinker. For every 3 people who think Steve McQueen on a motorcycle is cool there's 1 person who is "put off" because they don't know how to ride one and it makes them feel inadequate. I could continue...
