  • Becoming Bond

Becoming Bond (2017), now streaming on Hulu, is a rollickingly great romp of how George Lazenby from ”the land down under” was cast as “the next James Bond” in 1969. If you don't laugh, cry, and smile along the way while watching this, seek therapy immediately.

True to form, the on-camera sessions with George Lazenby highlight the brash confidence and self-assured manner that (to this writer) is typical of Lazenby's countrywomen and countrymen.

“Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” — Mark Twain. On this point, George Lazenby and his story do not disappoint.

The “stranger than fiction” true story of George Lazenby's tale of luck, timing, and love ordinarily would be more than a feature film could possibly wrangle into a 92-minute story, yet Writer/Director Josh Greenbaum “has gone and done it anyway,” and with great storytelling skill to boot.

Of particular interest to viewers will be the “meshing” of re-enactments with the on-camera interview of the now stately and venerable Lazenby. They are smoothly accomplished and serve to highlight the imaginative and intelligent vision of Becoming Bond Writer/Director Greenbaum.

The film editing by Billy McMillin is perfectly timed and executed, and that alone would be “well worth the price of admission,” as the saying goes, yet this documentary delivers far more.

See this heartfelt and uplifting story if you're able; you won't be sorry!

It's a terrific film and I thought they got the tone just right. Certainly one of the better docudramas (or docucomedies) around!
