  • Captain Marvel

so i watched this last night, and i hafta say, i liked it. a lot of action, which i love.

but, when i left i was thinking, " i wonder if i'd seen this before the 23 other Agenger movies if i would have liked it as much, or as i fear, i'm simply accepting that these superhero films are gonna go a certain way?"

i really liked the opening and i was happy to see that Nicole Perlman was involved in the story development.

but i have to admit, when i saw this...

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame

i was like, wow, maybe now we can get some of our films made, because they're going to need new material, unless they're gonna go hogwild on YA novels. who knows? oh, but wait, if the Avengers come back...

I saw it awhile ago and I found myself really under-excited by it all. I neither liked nor disliked what was supposed to be the SJW-ness of it all. That was really, from my perspective, beside the point.

I just felt that it carried such a huge burden of backstory that I had trouble trying to keep it all straight.

    So -- spoilers?

Okay, so the girl -- whose name is Ver? -- is being raised as a warrior by the Kree.

Right, right -- the Kree. Now, I remember that name. Who the **** are the Kree. The Kree. Now, am I supposed to know, going in, as I finally remembered like half through the movie, that the Kree are the super bad guys from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie?

Because I just haven't been paying all that much attention to these movie to keep track of what race is what and who the hell is who.

So if I was supposed to know this -- I sort of didn't. And if I wasn't -- what about all of those millions of people who, because they pay so much more attention to this stuff than I do -- they certainly knew from the beginning that she was working for the bad guys.

So, if she's working for the bad guys -- then doesn't that sort of blow the whole surprise -- which is that the "bad guys" that she's fighting (while working for the bad guys) ultimately turn out not to be bad guys and that Jude Law -- you know, her mentor, that guy who pretty much is always cast as a bad guy, turns out to be a bad guy?

I mean -- how early are we all supposed to know she she's a total sap for not knowing that she's on the wrong side in this story?

I mean, if you substitute "Nazi" for Kree -- well, if you've the average American high school student and you've never heard of World War II and don't know who the Nazis are -- maybe the story will work in the sense that it will come as a surprise that the hero is working for the bad guys -- but most people will know up front.

In the same way, if you've been following these movies, then you should at least have a passing knowledge of "Marvel" History and thus you would know that the Kree are the bad guys?

I mean, even I knew the name and I caught on at a certain point -- hey, aren't the Kree the bad guys? Wasn't that guy with the funny hammer and that weird ship from Guardians of the Galaxy -- wasn't that the Kree?

Oops -- yeah. They're the Kree.

Okay -- problem two. Anybody have a vague recollection of Jupiter Ascending? Now, this is by no means as bad as that but it has a similar problem with some of the action sequences.

That is, they are so dark and so underlit that you literally cannot see what is going on.

On top of which, I'm afraid to say -- Brie Larsen just doesn't cut it in terms of the way her fights are staged.

Now, I have no idea how good Brie Larsen is literally, in terms of fighting. She may be good, bad or indifferent.

But the reality is, whatever she, personally, is capable of doing, the fights themselves are mediocre.

Compare the action in this to Alita and there is no comparison. Compare the action in this to Wonder Woman there is no comparison.

Compare the action in this to the latest Mission Impossible -- or any of the recent Mission Impossible movies, where there is real thought put into the action sequences, which are incredible and breathtaking and memorable.

Same thing with John Wick -- just really brilliant action.

The action in Wonder Woman is utterly forgettable.

It's not a terrible movie. And, by the way, I really like Brie Larsen -- I've liked her in other things, but I didn't find her character, as Captain Marvel, terribly interesting or appealing. She didn't seem to go through much of anything, face and overcome and serious obstacle and in the end -- ehh.

Captain Marvel was fun. i just wanted to see Brie Larson kick a lot of ass and that's pretty much what i got for my ticket. but also with a slightly better story and themes than the usual Marvel junk. still succumbs to the third-act kitchen sink syndrome that most comic tentpoles fall back on but i largely enjoyed it

I enjoyed it, but I admit that I am getting kind of burned out by Marvel movies. They all seem the same. I am hoping a summer movie comes out that makes me go "whoa." I know Avengers Endgame is smashing all records, but anyone really doubt that all those characters that supposedly died aren't coming back? I didn't really feel stakes because I know they are all coming back.

              Re: Captain Marvel

one thing i will say, i love it when there are amazing fight scenes. i've researched parkour, krav maga and other fighting styles to bring authentic action to my own work, so seeing CM primarily using her fist blasting was a bit of a let down.

and the whole idea of her getting even more powerful was a like a 'signal booster,' right? at one point i actually said out loud, "fly, don't you know you can fly now?" haha.

i, like nmstevens love a good action sequence and think captain marvel could have infused more cool fighting styles and techniques. but i guess when you have the biggest 'guns' in the universe you just use them to obliterate your enemies.

Captain Marvel is Marvel's answer to no have their own 'superman,' but now they do.
