  • The Assassination of Richard Nixon

    Sean Penn's best performance EVER!

    This isn't the Howard Johnson's.

This is the third good film in a row (after Criminal and Undertow) that Whitenavel has posted about, but I'm the only one who ever responds and then the thread goes off into the dead zone.

This might be my favorite Penn movie.

      Who's Richard Nixon?
ENNIS spits in the palm of his hand, puts it on himself.

These threads rarely get many replies before someone starts their own on the same goddamn movie.

Obviously, I saw that thread, too..... but after Authorized's succinct, insightful reply, really, what else is left to say about this film?

Sorry, I didn't search for a previous thread. My bad.

Kintner, normally I would have seen these recent movies in the theater, but I've decided to lessen my theater going and start renting more. I'm on a renting frenzy of several films from last year that I wanted to see. I still have a few more to go.......Primer, Mean Creek, Donnie Darko Director's Cut, etc.
            Any other suggestions?

Re: The Assassination of Richard Nixon

I would go with Donnie Darko first. The bonus disc has the single best extra feature I have ever seen on a dvd. The "I am Donnie Darko's #1 Fan" contest winner, which is really just the video diary of a stalker. Very Scary.

Primer is good, but too hard to follow after 2 or more beers. Mean Creek didn't do anything for me, but i paid 9.00. It's probably worth a rental.

I really enjoyed Bad Education, but don't rent it if you have no tolerance for gay-transvestite-noir. Oh, and subtitles.

I myself am sitting tight until Tuesday, when Team America and Tarnation come out.

Team America is brilliant, if you're a fan of Matt and Trey. Looking forward to Tarnation and revisiting The Life Aquatic which I found to be an interesting pleasure from Wes Anderson. It's only enjoyable if you really like him.

A few that may have slipped under the radar:

Bus 174 (2003) - documentary of a hostage situation on a bus in Brazil (Brazilian).

The Return (2003) - A father returns home with no explanation after several years to take his sons on a fishing trip (Russian).

Time of the Wolf (2004) - A family tries to survive in the post-apocolyptic French countryside (French).

Does anyone know when Lilya-4-Ever comes out on DVD? I missed this one too and really want to see it.
