  • Best DVD Commentaries

Which DVDs do you think have the best commentary? Which ones have you learned the most about the film making process and film writing?

Strangely, I learned a lot from the Eurotrip special feature dvd commentary. It gave some interesting insights into making a low(er) budget comedy.

I had to dig deep into the archives to find this one (all the way back to last month) but it should help.

      Boogie Nights. Both of them.

      This isn't the Howard Johnson's.

That post asked for recent commentary. I want best of all time.

Maybe not the "best of all time" but my pick for best writing/biz commentary I've heard would be the Yost/Gordon one from Speed SE.

The info is exceptional (idea genesis, how much he got paid, script changes, casting, character changes, turnaround, the big "3rd Act" addition, how they got cut out of Speed 2, and tons more) - plus Yost and Gordon are buds and it's a very friendly, casual and incredibly easy-to-listen-to commentary.

Too bad these two didn't make any more good movies together, though I'd be willing to slap down some cash to hear them blab about Woo and Broken Arrow. Not Hard Rain though... no way.

              Best all time filmmaker's commentaries:

              The Talented Mr. Ripley (Minghella)
              The Incredibles (Byrd)
              Shawshank Redemption (Darabont)
              The Conversation (Coppolla)
              Road To Perdition (Mendes)

I would wager a guess that ANY commentary by the above directors would be dandy.

              Best critical commentaries:

              Dark City (Ebert)
              Citizen Kane (Ebert)

Best film as train wreck commentaries:

Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (Berlinger)
              Brazil (Gilliam)

              Worst directors as commentators:

              Steven Spielberg
              Woody Allen
              Martin Scorcese

because they refuse to do them

              and

              M Night Shamalan

              because he doesn't.

Whoops....my bad. I have the original dvds of Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, all sans commentary. But I'm glad to see he's recently come on board with the rereleases.

Hopefully, he doesn't do what I call faux commentaries, where they just splice snippets of interviews over the scenes. I hate that.

                          Hey B1tches,

I love DVD commentaries cause that means I don't have to sit through a boring film class or read a text book.

One of the most interesting commentaries I've heard was the one on The Sum Of All Fears, with director Phil Alden Robinson and novelist Tom Clancy. The entire track is Clancy being his abrasive self and pointing out every mistake and calling the movie bullsh1t, with the director sitting next to him and biting his tongue. The track literally starts off with the director introducing himself with, "Hello, my name is Phil Alden Robinson and I directed this movie." Followed by Clancy says, "Hello, I'm Tom Clancy. I wrote the book they ignored." And that's just for starters. A true director's nightmare.

A previous poster mentioned Martin Scorsese. He's been commentary friendly for a long time, tracing back to the laser discs days. In fact, Scorsese did commentary tracks on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's films way before he started doing them for his own movies. Check out Scorsese's insights on The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, and The Life And Times Of Colonel Blimp.

Best director commentary: Minghella on Talented Mr. Ripley, Scorsese on Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Fincher on Fight Club and Seven, Gilliam on Brazil

Best screenwriter commentary: Tarantino on True Romance

Best Cast & Crew Commentary: Chasing Amy, Boogie Nights, Say Anything, The Winslow Boy

Best Critical Commentary: The Graduate, The Seventh Seal, L' Avventura, Sullivan's Travels, The Bride of Frankenstein, Bad Day At Black Rock, Citizen Kane.

Best TV show commentary tracks: Josh Whedon & Tim Minear's on "Serenity" the pilot episode for Firefly, Joel Surnow and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe O'Brien) on the 3rd season of 24, episode "1am-2am"

Best Anime commentary track: Appleseed (2004)

Worst director commentaries: Anything by Tim Burton or Paul Verhoeven

Strangest commentary track: Val Kilmer on Spartan, and Carrot Top's track on The Rules Of Attraction, a movie he had no involvement in.
