  • The Constant Gardener

Caught a preview screening of this yesterday. Fernando Meirelles (City of God) directed this political thriller set in Africa starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. He was on hand to discuss the film afterward.

An interesting thing he discussed was how hard it was to find the correct order to the scenes. The script is based on a John LeCarre novel and was written in a linear narrative. Only once they'd edited several different version of the film did they find the correct order of the scenes. In the final version it became a moody thriller with the audience always wondering "what's going on?" However, when it had been edited linearly and also with the ending coming first (ala Sunset Blvd), it was, in the director's own words, "Boring."

I think I enjoyed this more than The Interpreter, but also for much different reasons. Meirelles gives an urgency to his dialogue scenes that really works well within the thriller genre. Here's hoping he'll make more like this.

It's an interesting trailer, Hairy. I'll probably see it when it's on ABC.
