Right on. I kept waiting for something to happen...nothing ever did. And after such a promising opening shot of Scarlett's bee-hind!

It's the film maker's job to give it.
Coppola delivered; it just wasn't what you ordered.

i hope this isn't an endorsement of pandering.
an artist shouldn't concern himself with whether or the audience

One of my faves. The story is all there, for those that can see it.

If only the guys who claim the mere mention of this movie puts them to sleep were telling the truth.

It ain't for everybody. But it's a great movie. I just bought it on DVD. And not just for that opening shot (yeah, you know the one I mean).

One question: How is it racist to observe that people in other countries speak different languages, and a visitor there would have trouble understanding them?

                  Re: Lost in Translation

This movie never would have gotten made if there hadn't been actors willing to perform in front of a camera with film in it.

                  Think about it.

If by pandering you mean to accommodate the audience's needs in order to satisfy them - then yes, it is an endorsement of pandering.

an artist shouldn't concern himself with whether or the audience
is too stupid to get their work.
Perhaps, but film is not art, it's a business.

Studios do not sponsor art, they invest in a product.

Long before you get to the point where you can wag your fingers at the audience from your ivory tower, you will need to have many people read the script and respond well to it before it will move through the production pipeline and be turned into a film.

If you don't give them what they need to understand and enjoy the story, they won't push it forward.

Telling them it's their own fault for being too stupid to appreciate it won't help your cause.

If your product doesn't give the customer what they need to understand and enjoy the product, they won't by the product.

                    Is that the customer's fault?

                      Re: Lost in Translation

                      WTF?

Vast numbers of people "got" this movie and enjoyed it. What's to get, anyway. It's - by design - a very simple story.

Try explaining Ocean's Twelve to me. I didn't get that. What about Aliens Vs. Predator. Didn't make a lick of sense.

I can't think of how many studio "business" movies left me scratching my head wondering what I had just seen.

Could it possibly be both? A commercially viable artform? Nah, that couldn't be it.

Last I checked Lost in Translation was an independent film.

First Hollywood studio involvement was the home video arm of Universal.

This is exactly what I meant when I said that I wasn't cool enough to like this movie. It is simply just not my taste. I like to get swept away by a movie. It's not that I didn't get it, I didn't find it entertaining. However, if you didn't like this movie then you are automatically "a frat boy wannabe, and sophmoric."
