I recently attained the season from a friend, and I just finished watching the first disc. It's a pretty interesting mesh of sci fi and western. I really have a few problems with it, but I'd really love to hear what any of you guys think.

Re: Firefly
I thought it was very good. If you look at Alien Resurrection you can see how the crew of the Betty are a rough draft of Firefly. It deffinitely had potential and its a shame that the short lifespan meant some of the characters went absolutely nowhere (the preacher). I love Whedon, but it would be nice for him to do something new instead of telling the same story of extended family bonding through adversity that he has been doing as far back as Toy Story.Frosties are just Cornflakes for people who can't face reality.

Re: Firefly
I got the DVD set for my birthday, I'd caught most of the eps on Sci-Fi Channel previously and read transcripts from twiztv.com to make up for the ones I missed, but it was great to watch 'em all in sequence and get into the charismatic characters and the story arc. Once again I experienced a feeling of loss and disappointment when I got to the end. I rate Firefly highly.
After you watch all the eps and then watch Serenity -- if you haven't already seen this, some interesting and dare I say wacky opinions were aired recently in this thread in Writers & Scripts forum:

Re: Firefly
This may be too early to critcize (I'm only on episode 9), but it seems like the main character, who's name escapes me, doesn't have a particularly engaging story arc. Sure he's got dimension thanks to his representation on his side of a war, but he's not looking for anything. He's not trying to accomplish anything that I can see, aside from his daily or weekly missions. Maybe this will change as I get further along, but as of now I really have no reason to root for him other than his coolness. There's nothing of value at the end of the tunnel that might engage me with his character.
Maybe that's just me.Joan: What does the "T" stand for?
Jack: Trustworthy.

Well, you most surely are going to be disappointed then because the whole point is that none of them, but especially Mal, are wanting anything more than to just make it and survive, period. None of the crew are after anything in particular or have any specific agenda or goal(s) that they want to ultimately accomplish. They are just going from job-to-job (or, well, crime-to-crime) trying to make a living for themselves so they can survive on the constant fringes of space.
Really, the ultimate aspect of suspense is the question of if they will survive or not as they have the Alliance, Reavers and a multitude of other things constantly in potential conflict with them.
"Firefly" and "Serenity" are great as all three of Joss Whedon's shows have been. It's quite an achievement that someone has been able to put out three series, one after another, that never really lost their spark. Fox committed the stupidest of mistakes in canceling "Firefly". They never "got" the show to begin with and when looking back it unfortunately appears it was a doomed marriage to begin with.

Re: Firefly
awwwww, I loved the series and sure wish the movie had been the great boxoffice hit it deserved to be. Definitely no one should watch SERENITY without watching the series first (probably explains why it wasn't a movie success too) ... but saying that, it's a great sci-fi story in itself (which really didn't hit me until I watched it again)
Mal is a total character trip, from funny ironic Mal to damned dangerous Mal. The Western/SF (and Chinese cultural drift) fusion was an utter charm.sigpic
