Re: Sopranos' creator says Tony didn't get whacked!

Well, Tony did look up just before the screen went black, so he saw it coming, whatever IT was.

And the audience was waiting for it to happen so it's not like they wouldn't see it coming.

Everyone was expecting it. Tony was expecting it by the number of times he looked up to see who was coming through the door. So if everyone saw it coming who, like Silvio, didn't see it coming?

That's bullsh!t. I've invested six seasons into these characters. I'd never go so far as to say I, the viewer, am "owed" a definitive ending / conclusion, but it would certainly be appreciated. Most television viewers aren't into this "what do you think happened?" crap. You're the creator. What do YOU think happened? Decide and then show us. If I don't like it, I'll get on a message board and b!tch about it.

Chase seems to be confusing the issue in this latest interview. He's perceiving people as being pissed that Tony lived because we wanted him to die to pay for all the bad things he's done. Wha-? Are you kidding? No one's saying that. (Well, I'm not.)

If Tony did indeed live, great. What a cool ending, actually. The bad guy gets away with it all. Very morally ambiguous. What does that tell us?

Instead, Chase lays on the extra-thick overtones that a hit is seconds away from taking place before cutting to black. That pissed off droves of people. I hated the ending but I hate it even more knowing that -- in the mind of the creator -- Tony and his family live because I didn't perceive that scene to be from Tony's POV. Had it, okay, Tony's obviously on edge; we can accept that.

The way it was shot and ended was just trickery on the part of Chase & Co. and a massive mistake in my opinion.

I finally watched it and I thought it was pretty obvious that he was about to be shot in front of his family, very much like the demise of Phil.

Ooh, calm down people. It's what's known as an 'open' ending. Has a long and venerable history.

I know that current Hollywood thinking doesn't believe in such a thing but I love them. How many times have we seen 'closed' endings that are just too convenient, too contrived, too cliched? It's great to see an artist saying 'this is how I want to end it' and not taking it to a test screening to see if everybody and his cat agrees.

It's an implied ending, which makes it more horrifying -- that Tony was going to be hit with his family as witnesses. It works for me. Less it more.

The question I would want to ask Chase, was he doing a twist on the Joey Gallo hit? Not implying that an ongoing basis Tony was the fictionalized version of Joey (Tony was an Upper East Side trust fund baby in comparison to some of Joey's more colorful antics, if you check them out on line). The circumstances of the hit are just waaaaaay too similar.
