William Monahan might be the best screenwriter working now.

          Christopher Nolan

I like William Monahan only for Kingdom of Heaven. I'm curious about his Jurassic Park IV script. I've heard awful things about it.

I've been a huge fan of Stuart Beattie for a while. But I am starting to like J Nolan and DB Weiss.

Even though he hasn't done much, Shane Black is still the man in my opinion.

i'm with u on black. i refer to a shane script almost everyday with the stuff i'm writing. i use them to find out how he tackles tough action scenes.

                  Since 2000?

Gee, that's a hard one. Too many to mention, really.

Beattie's written some good stuff. Always enjoy his stuff.
All the action writers. Then there's Gilroy - who's always enjoyable.

Recently, I really enjoyed The Cold Warrior.

Meh... I don't know if I can come up with just one writer, so I'll list some scripts that I really dug:

THE DOGS OF BABEL (Jamie Linden)
A KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW (Travis Beacham)
THE BASEMENT aka AN AMERICAN CRIME (Tommy O' Haver & Irene Turner)
                    MOEBIUS (Neil Cohen)
                    RECOUNT (Danny Strong)
                    RED (Stephen Susco)
                    ROUNDTABLE (Brian K. Vaughan)
THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT (Tim Talbott)
                    SYNECDOCHE, NY (Charlie Kaufman)
THE LOVELY BONES (Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson)

                      Re: Favorite Writer since 2000?

Beattie, Gilroy ... but I enjoy most scripts I read, partly because it's so difficult to write well.

Therefore for me, it's less about favourite, and more about "what are you trying to do here - ah, that's interesting, visual, clever, I like that approach ... "

Diversity in screenplays is key for me, rather than "favourites" !
