  • Action films written by women

Maybe an odd question, but has there ever been a blockbuster action film written by a female writer?
My first crack at a logline usually makes a great synopsis!

Kathryn Bigelow is the first one that comes to mind. The draft she and Cameron wrote for Point Break kicks a lot of ass.

There's Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, too.

I wouldn't call them blockbusters, but both THE ASSASSIN/ POINT OF NO RETURN (the one with Bridget Fonda) and THE SPECIALIST were written by a woman.

Lexi Alexander wrote and directed the awful "Punisher: War Zone". The spirit was there but execution was off.

ROMANCING THE STONE, which was action adventure romcom, was written by a woman. Who would have probably written the sequel had she not died in a car accident.

maybe women should use a male pseudo name when writing action like men do when they write romance and women's stories for lifetime television.

Not a pure action film, but Jane Goldman with Kick-Ass?

I like this thread. I wonder how many of these were cowriters and how many were sole credit?

I didn't know the Romancing the Stone writer died! That's sad, for real.

I remember looking at the credits for the second film and wondered why she didn't write it. But I figured it was just some studio decision.

Incredibly sad, and I think about it every time I watch the movie.

In regards to other female action writers, there was an excellent scene [the writing, not the performances] in The Octagon between Chuck Norris and the guy who played the fur coat dealer. I had to look up who wrote the script and it was an actress turned screenwriter named Leigh Chapman.
