  • NYU's "Purple List" of unproduced scripts

Have you all seen that NYU has recently released a Purple List of unproduced scripts from writers in their grad school program.

Chosen by a panel including actress-director Jodie Foster, writer-director John Sayles, writer-director Karyn Kusama and other industry professionals, the screenplays on the Purple List are production-ready or in pre-production and seeking financing. Different judges will be selected every year for the panel.
    Here are the loglines.
ECHOES FROM WITHIN by Melanie Delloye - DRAMA
Nina, a young teenager from Bogota's upper class, meets David, a young delinquent who strangely reminds her of her long lost brother.

IT HAD TO BE YOU by Sasha Gordon - ROMANTIC COMEDY

Surprised by a sudden proposal and subsequent ultimatum from her boyfriend Chris, buttoned-up Sonia embarks on a raunchy, bumpy journey of self-discovery.

LEE by Chloé Zhao - COMING OF AGE
As his two best friends plan to leave for college, a Lakota teen wonders if his future on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is pre-ordained when a tragedy forces him to take dangerous action to protect his family.

NEWLYWEEDS by Shaka King - COMEDY

A stoner couple get high, get by and get lost.

MY HUSBAND'S CORPSE by Sehaj Sethi - COMEDY/DRAMA

After Beth's husband dies on a train in India she is kicked off in the middle of nowhere with the body, and no idea how to get home.

THE WHISPERING GIANT by Kim Spurlock - COMEDIC DRAMA

Willa Ochs has it all: a handsome fiancé, a brand new wedding dress, some edible underwear and her faith in Jesus. But in Midkiff, West Virginia, even that ain't enough to get married!
In my opinion, it's not the most impressive bunch and some don't really feel like loglines, especially THE WHISPERING GIANT.

I don't get what that one is about. So this woman has all of these..."assets" (?) but for some reason she can't get married in this particular West Virginia town. Is there a particular reason why she can't get married? I don't get a sense of the conflict whatsoever from that logline.

That's a kind way of saying it.

This has my spider sense tingling.

Truly, these loglines are pretty generic -- of course with the exception being the edible underwear.... I'd read the first ten pages of My Husband's Corpse, it sounds like the most original. Which ones are already in pre-production??

Is MY HUSBAND'S CORPSE a remake of THE DARJEELING LIMITED?

This can't seriously be someone's logline, let alone someone who's spent years of their life at school to write that logline.

Is this whole thing a joke? or...?

College students. New York. Not necessarily commercial type stuff that makes a list like this.

Nothing there seems very interesting - and even the edible undies is not part of the story. The HUSBAND'S CORPSE thing is a full dead body, not a box of ashes, so that might be interesting... but kind of vague about what happens next.

Inspired by the lives of NYU film students.

surely the list was selected from the screenplays and not the loglines. i mean, Foster and Sayles know quality.
