  • Best Mexican Films, Writers, Directors?

Doubt I'll get a lot of responses, but who knows.

I'm wondering about Spanish-language stuff, so Alfonso Cuaron and Children of Men, for example, wouldn't count.

If anyone can point me to some resources, topical and otherwise, that'd be great -- is there a Mexican Variety, for example?

    Gracias.

I love Latin cinema. Studied it in college.

All three of Fabián Bielinsky films are excellent. He's a fantastic director. Especially The Aura. To bad his life was cut short.

XXY and Carancho were great films too! I like most of the films with Ricardo Darin in them. He's a fantastic actor.

Pixote was another good film if you can find it.

Alejandro González Iñárritu, Walter Salles & Alfonso Cuarón have become the mainstream directors in my opinion.

Thanks for the tips. Psyched to check out Bielinsky. Forgot about Darin, I remember liking Nine Queens.

Does this only apply to dramas? I love Cantinflas and India Maria comedies.

Hi CCC, and thanks. Anything and everything concerning the topic is great -- I'll check out the titles you suggested as a way to build out my frame of reference -- but what I'm really looking for are current/topical titles and a source cataloguing who's who, if there's one out there. (At this point I'm thinking of IMDBPro, and piecing together what info I can).

Are you writing a paper or position statement? Or looking for business connections?

Reference source might be IMCINE. Hard b.o. stats are not easy to get, though. A good Who's Who would be the directors in the anthology Revolucion, except Rodrigo Garcia who is not Mexican. Also visit sites for the major film fests -- Guadalajara and Morelia.

I loved The Aura and Bielinsky's others, though he was Argentinian, as is the wonderful actor Ricardo Darin.

Fantastic tips, Canela. Thanks so much -- precisely what I'm looking for.

Being Mexican, I think I can give you some ideas.

Televisa (national Mexican TV chain) used to (they probably still do, but I haven't lived in Mexico in over 10 years, so don't quote me) broadcast national films on television. Lots of classics: Pedro Infante, Cantinflas, Maria Felix, that sort of thing. If you want to get an idea of the sort of stuff they broadcast, try here:

                http://www.televisa.com/home-enterta...gos/peliculas/

Here's a directory of Mexican production companies:
                http://www.millonesdevoces.com/medio....cfm?ID_Cat=12

Here's a page maintained by the ITESO University giving information on Mexican film directors:
                http://cinemexicano.mty.itesm.mx/director.html

Which includes an alphabetical listing of directors here:
                http://cinemexicano.mty.itesm.mx/director0.html

In particular, check out Carlos Carrera, who directed "El Crimen del Padre Amaro", which created quite a buzz in its day, or Jorge Fons, who directed "Rojo Amanecer", also a very notable movie. Anyway, surfing around the director's directory will give you lots of good info.

                Happy surfing!

Oh, I forgot to mention "Danzon" directed by Maria Novaro. It was a really fun movie if a bit odd...well, like all mexican films tend to be, ha ha!

(In the directory, the directors in bold are the most prolific/well-known/successful ones, so just click away and surf around, there are links to reviews/summaries of their movies as well)

I love Carlos Carrera! El Traspatio (The Backyard) is the best non-docu film, IMO, dealing with the Juarez femicides.

Here are a few of my favorite contemporary Mexican directors:

                          1. Gerardo Naranjo
                          2. Rigoberto Pérezcano
                          3. Jorge Ramírez-Suárez
                          4. Luis Carlos Carrera González
                          5. Alejandro Lozano
                          6. Alejandro González Iñárritu
                          7. Carlos Reygadas
                          8. Pedro Aguilera
                          9. Amat Escalante
                          10. Francisco Vargas
                          11. Marisa Sistach
                          12. Guillermo del Toro
                          13. Fernando Eimbcke
                          14. Diego Luna

Also check out the short films of Ernesto Martínez Bucio

I just found this list I am not familiar with everyone here. Hope it helps.

                          Cheers,

@sixridgeroad referring to blueshrimp unexpectedly as camarón. It made me laugh. ¡Ja, ja!

For those who do not know: camarón = shrimp.

Don't know from directors, but some films I liked:

                              Amores Perros
                              Miss Bala
                              Sleep Dealer
                              Saving Private Perez
