  • Specs that launched careers?

Could you please recommend spec scripts, available online, that sold and turned unknown writers into successful professionals? I know it has to glow in the dark, I just want to check how bright.

Don't know if it's available online -- WB is pretty ruthless when it comes to keeping scripts of their films from download -- but Shane Black's LETHAL WEAPON is probably the most famous spec sale ever to have launched a career.

In honor of dhsteinberg, whose movie Miss Dial came out 2 days ago (sounds like he may possibly be answering questions over on a Business Questions and Advice thread)... pretty sure Slackers really launched his career. As I remember he got offered a day job the day after it sold for 700K. (One of my favorite screenwriter stories.) I believe you can find numerous articles about him and the script, as well as the script itself, pretty readily online.

Chris already directed "Heights" starring Glenn Close and Elizabeth Banks, so he already had something of a career. Nick, who co-wrote the upcoming "Robocop" reboot, was an actor/writer on the show "Let's Bowl" and showran the MMA show "Bodog Fight". Ditto for him.

The best examples would have to be Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), Russ Gerwith (Inside Man), Michael C. Martin (Brooklyn's Finest) and Diablo Cody (Juno).

It was an extended version of a short he worked on.

Argo wasn't a spec, as Smokehouse held the rights to the Wired article. Also, I think he did Baltimore before Argo.

THE LOW DWELLER was supposed to have launched Brad Ingelsby's career, but he made some questionable choices afterward.

RUN ALL NIGHT did what Low Dweller was supposed to. Truly launched his career.
