  • When Shane Black ruled

This article about Shane Black may be of interest, though not a recommendation to imitate.

Sometimes I've done that with description, but I concentrate on dialogue because that's what the audience is hearing. I'm not pissing on Shane, BTW.

      Love it.

      And his films work too.

Unlike certain specs I've read where the description was more entertaining than the story.

For such a copied writer he really is inimitable.

          When Shane Black ruled?

          He still does.

Great voice! Great article. Lots of writers write with this (not the exact same) stylized approach. I love it! And great about how he made it fun for the reader - people who say to take out all those unfilmables, I laugh at you.

More than ever now as he's the co-writer and director of what is certain to be one of the top grossing films of all time. He's soon to be Hollywood royalty, but I always liked the guy, going all the way back to THE MONSTER SQUAD.

I got to see a screening of LETHAL WEAPON where he did a Q&A afterward, and he was humble, down to earth, and just an all around cool guy.

I wonder if this means he'll be too busy to hang out with us at Austin now...

Pumped to hear he's doing Doc Savage. Wish he'd have a crack at The Destroyer (Remo) too.

I think those seemingly trivial in-jokes are actually very good at establishing the tone and attitude of the story. If you watch the films that got eventually filmed, they have that same cocky, assured, blackly humorous tone that that the in-jokes have.

Audience might not *see* or *hear* those particular jokes. But they *feel* them, because Black was so great at establishing the general tone of his script, and that tone was then transformed into a film.

Two years ago I was at an Austin Film Festival roundtable event for Semi-Finalists. At the table was an studio executive (from Paramount I think) - one of the screenwriters brought up Shane Black and the exec responds, "Shane Black can do whatever he wants to do... he's Shane Black" - I thought to myself "oh what it must be like to have a studio exec say that about you..."

One of my greatest inspirations. Always loved his technique. I think his charm lies in ripping the "mystique" out of Hollywood screenwriting. And I can see how execs would want to meet him as soon as they skimmed through LW. It's like listening to a funny story with your friends at a bar. Very accessible.

And he's a regular, down to earth guy whenever you see him.
